My name is Ayana, which means beautiful flower. My Mother named me that before her and my Father we're killed shortly after I was born. I don't know who killed them or how they were killed. If I knew who it was, believe me, I would've slaughtered them like a pig with my own bare hands.

I'm from one of the worst ghettos in Brazil. We call them Favelas. After my parents were killed, I roamed the streets homeless until I was 4. Then, I was put in an orphanage for girls. I hated it there.

The staff would make us work tiresly all day, cleaning and working at coffee farms in the hot sun with no pay. If we didn't get enough work done, we would get beaten and raped by the male staff.

The other girls there would also tease me because of my dark skin and long fluffy hair. In Brazil, dark skin is frowned up. They would call me "alcatrão bebê", which means tar baby in Portugese. I would spend many nights crying.

A year ago, when I was 15, I was sent to live with my grandmother here in New York. I didn't even know I had a grandmother. But when I found out, I was ecstatic! Not only did I get to leave that hellhole, but I also had a grandmother I never met.

The only problem was, I didn't know much english. So my grandmother sent me to this English school so I could learn the language. I still have kind of a thick brasillian accent and I'm not an expert, but I think I'll be okay. Hopefully...
