"And 5-6-7-8!"
Hikari was dancing her heart out. She had always been most confident in her dancing skills and she'd been preparing for this audition her whole life. As she moved with the music, she hit every beat and put everything she had into each move as if it would be her last.
As she hit the final pose of her audition song, she smiled brightly as she felt an odd sense of confidence fill her. Hikari couldn't remember the last time she had felt so good about herself. This overwhelming, ecstatic feeling felt completely foreign to her, but it was a much welcome change of pace from her usual depressed attitude. The representitives from JYP gave her a curt nod to cue her to begin the final part of her audition. She bowed to them and shifted on her feet, mentally hyping herself up.
Just as she was about to sing the first note of her audition song, however, JYP himself entered the room. Somehow, the nerves Hikari had been feeling just moments before multiplied exponentially. The comfortable practice room she was in no longer felt safe. She felt as if the temperature in room had dropped drastically and that the room had gotten overwhelmingly large. JYP simply took a seat directly in front of Hikari without saying a word and waited for her to begin.
Hikari took one, two, three deep breaths to try to calm herself down but she could feel herself shaking from the nerves. With one final breath, Hikari shakily began singing her song. She was aware of the fact that her voice was shaking while she sang, but she prayed to every god she could think of that JYP and the rest of his representatives wouldn't notice.
Of course they'll notice, they're professionals she thought to herself.
No no no. It's probably all in your head. Just keep singing! the kinder side of herself replied.
However, this internal monologue Hikari was having with herself did nothing to help her shaky voice, but instead made it worse and more noticeable. Hikari quickly stopped singing when she saw JYP put his hand up. She bowed low and mumbled a thank you, but she felt a foreboding sense of doom overcome her. He sighed as he leaned forward, interlacing his fingers together on the table in front of him.
"The way you have conducted yourself during what I have seen of this audition is highly unproffesional. Your emotions should never affect your peformance. It is normal to be nervous, but we are not looking for normality. We are looking for, and only accepting, the best of the best."
Hikari could feel tears pricking her eyes but she simply nodded. She assumed JYP was finished with her, but he continued to speak.
"Your singing was unstable and shaky throughout the whole song. I do not see you becoming a trainee anytime soon."
Again, Hikari nodded but this time a single tear fell from her eye which she quickly wiped away. She bowed again.
"Thank you for the opportunity," she said quietly, after which she hurried out of the room.
As soon as she left, tears began streaming down Hikari's cheeks. She tried to ignore the pitying stares of the others auditioning around her so she ran down the hallway with her head down. As she turned a corner, she was met by a seemingly unmovable force and fell back on her butt. She took this opportunity to quickly wipe the tears from her face.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" an unfamiliar voice said from above her. She looked up to see a boy around her age offering a hand to help her up. She hesitantly accepted his hand, but took note of the light shade of pink that brushed his cheeks as she took his hand.
"I'm Kim Yugyeom," he said with an adorable smile.
"Kimura Hikari," she replied with a half-hearted smile. However, Yugyeom quickly took note of her puffy eyes and put two and two together.
"You were here for the auditions weren't you?" he questioned. When he only recieved a look down as his response, he continued, "Don't worry about it. We're still young and there's tons of companies out there that would be lucky to have a girl as cute as you," he finished, slightly embarrassed.
Hikari quickly looked up at him in surprise, but then smiled shyly.
"Thanks for that, Yugyeom. I really needed a cheering up. I should probably get going now though. My mom is waiting to pick me up," she replied with a small laugh while gesturing behind herself to where she imgagined her mom was waiting.
"Maybe we'll see each other again sometime?" he said, hopefully, to her back as she walked away.
Hikari turned around and smiled at him cutely, "Maybe we will, if we're lucky."
-Hikari recalled the incident that occured two years ago with fondness. She hadn't seen Yugyeom in person since then, but the group he debuted with, GOT7, was rapidly gaining popularity. Hikari often wondered if he remembered the shy, sad girl that he met during one of his first days with JYP.
Yugyeom had said she had time to find a company that would accept her. However that was two years ago now and Hikari was fifteen. Most of the people who were going to become idols had already found their companies. It didn't help that as soon as a company found out about her history with depression, they gave her the cold shoulder. She couldn't help but feel as if this was her last chance.
As she looked up at the sign that said 'Bighit Entertainment", Hikari took a deep breath. She was not going to waste this opportunity; she was going to give it everything she had, no matter what.
