"One foot in front of the other, one foot in front of the other. . ."

Chanmi had been chanting this simple phrase inside her head since she woke up that morning. But how could seven little words be so intimidating? How could they encompass the terror that Chanmi felt deep within herself at the prospect of having to move to a new school?

Even though she lived a short five minute drive from her new school in Daegu, her family couldn't be bothered to actually do anything to help her so she had to walk to school. But then again, when have they ever done anything but criticize her?

"Chanmi, why are you eating again? All you ever do is eat and eat and eat! This is why no one ever wants to be your friend."

Chanmi cringed at the hurtful words her own mother had said to her that morning while she had been eating breakfast. Her mother had high standards and said Chanmi was a disgrace for weight just over the desired 45 kg. Even though she was the second top student at her last school, it was never good enough to please her family.

The walk to school seemed to somehow take forever and go by in the blink of an eye at the same time. Before she knew it, she was standing in front of the entrance to her new school, nearly shaking from her nervousness. The tall, gray building loomed over her in a way that felt like a chastising mother (as if she didn't get enough of that at home). She took a deep breath to collect herself and made her way into the school.

Instantly, the chatter of hundreds of students washed over Chanmi like the lapping waves of a serene ocean. But as she ventured further into the crowded hallway, heads began to turn toward her. The loud chatter of the students gave way to hushed whispers and stares in her direction which somehow seemed infinitely louder than the senseless chatter.

"Who's the new girl?"
"Do you see how skinny she is? Disgusting."
"She looks like a generic shutterfly model"

Chanmi clutched the books she was carrying closer to her chest as she lowered her head and continued walking down the hall. She had no idea where her class was but she definitely couldn't ask anyone right now since they were all whispering about her. She peeked up just to see if maybe, just maybe there was someone in the hallway who didn't give a damn who she was or how average she was. Then she saw him.

A boy with dark black hair who was crouching on the ground, searching through his backpack for something. She took another deep breath and cautiously approached him.

"Ex- excuse me...?" Chanmi said, still a good distance away from the boy. He seemed not to hear her so she stepped a little closer and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Excuse me?" she said a little louder, seemingly surprising the boy as he jumped back and landed on his butt.

"A- are you okay?" Chanmi said, her eyes wide as she felt bad for even approaching the boy.

"I think I almost had a heart attack," he said with a chuckle as he got up and brushed himself off. When Chanmi didn't respond, he clarified, "I was kidding."

She gave him an unsure smile but asked, "Do you know where Mr. Park's class is? I'm- I'm new here and I don't really know where I'm going. . ." she trailed off, worried that he was going to make fun of her.

He gave her a bright smile, "Yeah that's my class. I can walk you there, the bell's about to ring anyway. Uh, what's your name?"

"Park Chanmi," she replied, looking down at the ground. If she had known how attractive this boy was, she never would've been able to approach him.

"Nice to meet you Chanmi, I'm Jung Hoseok," he said with another adorable smile. Just then the bell rang and Hoseok brought her to the class where the teacher forced her to introduce herself.

"M- my name is Park Chanmi. I just moved her from Jinhae-gu. Please take care of me," she said with a small bow. As Chanmi looked around the room, she saw two open seats: one next to Hoseok and the other by a boy with mint colored hair who was staring out the window. She hoped she'd get to sit next to Hoseok since he had been so nice to her.

"Thank you Chanmi," Mr. Park said. "You can take the open seat next to Min Yoongi." At the sound of his name, the mint-haired boy turned his head to look towards the front of the room and looked at Chanmi in disinterest before returning to look out the window.

Chanmi sighed to herself, "So, it's gonna be that kind of year, huh?"
