"Hey mom, can I go to the coffee shop across the street for my break?"
"Sure dear, just make sure you're back before the dinner rush."
Areum nodded to her mom as she made her way out of her family's bakery. It had always been her mom's dream to own a bakery, so when her parents got divorced Areum's mom decided to go for her dream.
As she walked over to the coffee shop, she felt slightly nervous. Human interaction was not on top of the list of things Areum was good at. It's not that she didn't like other people, she was just extremely awkward and usually ended up scaring them away. She could only hope that it was her friend Soojin working the register tonight.
She made her way into the small coffee shop and savored the smell of fresh coffee that washed over her as she entered. Areum looked around at the rustic decor of the coffee shop and smiled. She had been coming here since she was little so it felt like a home away from home. She made to walk over to the counter to order a coffee but abruptly stopped when she noticed who was working there.
Shit. That's definitely not Soojin.
Behind the counter there was a boy with dark black hair who was cleaning . Areum had a mini panic attack. She had a hard enough time talking to anyone, but this boy was serving some mad looks. He noticed her staring and gave her a bright smile that instantly warmed her heart. She quickly looked away and pretended to be interested in one of the coffee cups that was on display.
Come on Areum, she thought to herself, he's just a person, right? A super attractive person, that is... No, stop being so superficial Areum. You don't know him... never judge a book by its cover right? Maybe he's a total jerk... or maybe he's the nicest guy in the world...
She realized that this mental "pep talk" was doing nothing to actually make her feel confident. She took a deep breath and finally approached the cash register before she could change her mind.
The boy left the counter where he was working to come stand before her on the other side of the cash register.
"Hi, what can I get for you?" he asked with the brightest smile Areum had ever seen.
She mumbled while looking at the ground, "Just a caramel macchiato, please."
The boy leaned forward a bit, "Sorry, what was that?"
Areum flushed from embarrassment but said slightly louder, "A- a caramel macchiato, please."
"Can I get a name for the order?" he said as he got a pen to write on the cup.
"Kim Areum," she said quietly. "What's your name?" As soon as she said it she wished she could take it back. Why had she said that? People don't usually ask the workers their name.
Great, now he's going to think I'm weird, she thought to herself. She just wanted to curl up in a ball in her bed and never leave again. She was about to turn and leave to sit at a table since the boy wasn't responding, but he finally did.
"Park Jinyoung," he said with a smile. "Nice to meet you, Areum."
