Chapter 28
Nico walked the steps to the mental hospital, his heart full of dread and his hands shaking like an addicts. Someone had left a note for him, two actually. One on a white note card with scribbled hand writing leaving this address, and another on a blue peice of paper. On the blue was a small little doodle of a set of amber eyes and a curly, cursive writing on it. 'I'm back! Mr. Jackson, Mr. Di Angelo, and Miss Dare are invited to the resurrection party of Luna Lovegrove! Come at 9 o'clock PM to the Club Halfbreed, and be ready for some fun!'
So here he was, in the cascade of the dying twilight, walking into the mental hospital that went along with the address. He had kept the card just in case there was something magical to explain why he was here. He walked up to the reception desk and waited for a woman in white with her hair braided back in side braid to get off the phone. He waited five minutes, then she put the phone down.
"Are you Nico Di Angelo?" She asked. Nico's eyes widened a little as he nodded. She smiled a perfect smile and stood up. "They said I should keep my eyes out for you. Please, fallow me." He did so reluctantly, trying to keep the horror of his face as they passed what seemed like hundreds of mental patients, some monsters, some demigods, mostly mortals. But, just so many lives ruined by something. The woman led him down a side hallway that led away from the main rooms, coming to a hall lined with windows that looked into white padded rooms.
Each of these rooms held someone in them, tied back in strait jackets and screaming, crying, or just staring at nothing in particular. " It's horrifying, isn't it?" The woman asked, looking back at Nico who was staring at the people as they passed. "Most of them just want to be left alone with their thoughts, some are just that crazy that they need a padded room so they don't hurt themselves." She stopped at the last room on the left, looking into it with sad eyes. "But she is different."
Nico looked into the room with her, his eyes widening in confusion and bewilderment. Annabeth was sitting in the very middle of the room, her legs crossed and eyes closed. She wasn't wearing a straight jacket, just a pair of light blue pajama like pants and a matching short sleeve shirt. Her hair was pulled back in a pony tail and she had spider bites all over her body, or at least what parts were showing to him.
"What happened to her?" He asked in a hushed whisper.
"We don't know." The woman confessed. "But, as a daughter of Athena, she isn't afraid of spiders anymore... and she keeps saying how she needs to see if Rachel is alive apologize to a Percy and you." Nico looked at the woman in surprise. She smiled back at him and looked in again. "However, we need to keep her here a few more days. Whatever happened to her,we need to know how deep they damaged her before we let her go."
Nico nodded, his eyes drifting back to Annabeth slowly. She looked better than she has been with him. Maybe this was the place she needed to be. "Can I talk to her?"
"In the room with her?" The woman asked. "Or over the coms?"
"Face to face."
The woman smiled and nodded, leading him to a side passage full of doors and stopped at one. "You have fifteen minutes. But if she looks to be getting violent with you or upset, you need to come out.Understand?" Nico nodded slowly.
"I understand."
Annabeth closed her eyes and started meditating. The four fluffy walls of white were making her eyes hurt. She had been in a dark room for so long that she had grown accustomed to the darkness. She even stopped fearing the spiders as time went by. They weren't that bad actually, just misunderstood. Much like her in this case.
She heard a door open slowly, but she couldn't quiet figure out where it was coming from. She heard slow footsteps on the comfy floor, stopping a few feet behind her. "If your here to give me meds, I don't need them." Annabeth said in a strong and well held voice. "I'm not like all the other people here."
"I know." Her eyes snapped open and she gasped. She knew that voice. But it couldn't be him! How would he know where those creeps had dumped her? Why would he be here? She turned around and sure enough, it was him.
Nico Di Angelo, the boy she had wanted out of the picture for a long time and had attempted to kill, was standing there staring at her. He had on his brown bomber jacket with the white fuzz that finally fit him right, a black tee shirt on, and a pair of blue jeans and black running shoes. Annabeth shook her head. 'No, this was a trick of the mind. He's not really here.'
Nico stepped forward and kneeled in front of her. "Hey, you feeling ok?"
"You aren't really." She said, closing her eyes and turning back to the other wall. "So why would you care?"
She didn't see the hurt in his eyes at this, but she felt his hand on her shoulder. "I am real, Annabeth. I really am." She flinched as his hand put pressure on her blemished skin. The bites still hurt, but the injections her captors gave her kept her alive even as she got enough bites to kill her. "Annabeth, what did they do to you?"
"Spiders. Tied me up and left me in a room with spiders." She opened her eyes and looked into his, her body tensing when she saw how close he was to her. "But you should already know that. Your just in my head after all."
"Oh yeah?" Nico said, arching an eyebrow. "Then explain why you would be thinking of me and not Percy? Or Rachel?"
Annabeth stared at him, then reached out a hand and touched his cheek. She felt the foreign feeling of warmth that she had almost forgotten while she was stuck in that room alone. Tears started to form in her eyes as she let her hand fall to his shoulders and engulfed him in a hug. He stiffened at this, but hugged her back after a few seconds.
"It's ok, Annabeth." He said softly. "you are safe."
"Am I?" Annabeth sobbed into his shoulder, clinging to him. "Am I really, Nico?"
Nico nodded, holding her gently like a brother. "Yes, you are." She smiled a little and just enjoyed the human contact, and they sat in the silence of the room for a little while. Till Annabeth pulled away and smiled brightly at him.
"So how is everyone on the outside?" She asked. Just like old times.
"Oh, they have all been a mess." Nico said jokingly. "Rachel had been torn up,thinking she killed a goddess, Percy has been trying to figure out what happened to you, and I have been writing a book." Annabeth's eyes widened a little, her smile growing on her face.
"Your writing poetry again?"
"No." He said, laughing a little. "I'm trying to write a real romance story." He laughed a little more, leaning back and smiling. "But our reality might just turn out to be fantasy, now wouldn't it?" Both of them started laughing, the room echoing with it like a thunder clap in the city.
"So, who's the couple?" Annabeth asked after her laughing subsided.
"I was actually going to ask Luna and Lucas if they would be willing to let me write about them."
"Really?"
"Yeah, what better love story is there than a robot who learned to feel and a mother of gods who has tried to subside the hole in her heart since her husband was ripped to peices?" Annabeth nodded slowly, a small smile on her face.
"The one your living right now would be a better story." Nico arched an eyebrow, concern playing on his face.
"What do you mean?"
"Think about it." Annabeth said, leaning forward so that Nico had to strain to hear her. "You have the perfect story right in front of you. A hook up at a club, a sudden accident, a budding romance that was cut short by outside forces, and then a slow resurrection of that love. Then you have a jealous woman who wants her man back, the friend who was caught in the cross fire, and now this!" She smiled brightly. "It's a perfect story!" Nico nodded slowly, his face twisting into a sort of serious face. His thinking face.
"But not many people like gay relations ships. I would have to change the characters a little bit-"
"No!" Annabeth said, shocking him. "You just need to change the names! This would be good for your career!Come on, Nico. Promise me you will write your love story for the world to see?"
"But.." Nico said slowly. "You would look like the bad guy... I don't want that to happen." She smiled a little and hugged him close, whispering him his ear.
"But a bad guy can always change in the end."
