Jack had had two types of breakdowns while telling the story. The first one was simply because an overwhelming amount of emotions rushing out while he spoke. He hadn't been one to talk, so the feeling of everything finally piecing together and coming out was both devastating, and amazing for him. It felt so good to get that off his chest.
The second type of breakdown, was the worst. The moment he even thought about what his father's friend did, it was like a snap of his fingers Jack begun breathing quickly. Snapping his hand from Mark, he looked around frantically. "No, no, no," he repeated, ignoring the pain when he scooted back trying to get away.
"Jack, calm down ," Mark attempted to touch him, but Jack flinched. "Hey, you're safe, he's not here. " he spoke quietly, trying to relax the other, but nothing seemed to help.
"I'll go get a doctor," the officer stood up and went to leave, but Mark stopped him.
"Please, don't, I'll get him to calm down. Why don't we finish this when he gets discharged?" Mark kept his eyes on the other.
"I'm afraid I have to tell someone," the officer replied, but Mark decided to ignore him.
"Hey, Jack, look at me," Jack had his eyes shut, and shaking his head violently, "Listen to my voice, it's me, it's Mark. Look at me," Jack finally did so, his eyes wide with fear, "See? It's me, you're okay. You're in the hospital, and you're safe. " Jack's quickened breath was slowly decreasing in speed, and slowly his body became less tense. The officer sighed quietly at the sight.
"I'll be back to plan a date to talk to you guys, we can do this at your house so he can be in a more familiar surroundings," Mark simply nodded and watched as the policeman walked out. Turning his attention back to Jack, he saw the half lidded eyes.
Mark's hand slowly creeped over to Jack, "Can I touch you?" He asked quietly, getting a nod as a response, slowly, but immediately holding his hand. "Can I hold you?" Jack nodded again, and Mark moved closer to wrap his arm around Jack's shoulders, letting the other's face hide in his own. Mark knew they weren't anything but friends at the moment, but not only was the feeling in his stomach pushing him to do this, but it was also the fact that it was comforting. He knew that it was comforting to some people, and nobody else would do it, so he would take that responsibility. "I'm proud of you," no response. "You talked to someone about what happened, and I'm so proud of you for that," again, no response. He sighed softly.
After a few minutes, a nurse came in with a cup of water and some pain meds. Seriously? It took this long for pain meds? Without any words, Jack moved and sat up completely, he took the small cup of water, along with the pill, taking it and drinking the rest of the water. At that time, the nurses left and Jack moved again to lie down.
Mark's hand moved to run his fingers through Jack's hair. Causing his blue eyes to flutter shut.
"So, if everything goes okay you should be discharged tomorrow," Mark continued speaking quietly. Jack simply nodded. "Please, talk to me. " nothing but silence.
"I'm sorry," Jack's words were barely audible. His eyes opened and stared blankly at the ceiling.
"You have nothing to apologize for-"
"Don't. Don't even start that, I shouldn't have gotten you into this. I shouldn't have called you-"
"Now, you quit," Mark pulled his hand away, "If you wouldn't have called me, you'd be dead, Jack. Dammit," Mark closed his eyes and took a deep breath, "I'm so glad you called me, I'm so glad you're not dead," Finally, Jack looked at him, and stared at him.
"I have so much to say, but I don't want to hurt you anymore. "
Mark sighed quietly, "I understand, we can talk about this another time. Why don't we talk about something else?"
Jack nodded and patted the be for Mark to lie down. He quickly obliged, lying on top of the blanket, lying on his side, while propping himself up with his elbow.
"What would you like to talk about?" Mark asked, not taking his eyes off of Jack.
"What have I missed at school?" He asked, making eye contact with the other.
"Not too much, actually. Most of it was just review, in math class we started a new unit, but it's pretty easy," Mark shrugged.
"How are you being treated?"
Mark shrugged, wanting to be truthful but not wanting to stress out Jack, "Not too horrible I suppose. Oh, we have a new student! He's from Sweden, and he's pretty cool. "
"Sweden? Wow. Two new students within a few weeks. Amazing. "
"He's not really put into any of the groups you told me about, he can almost be put in every category. He can get along with the jocks but then can talk to people like me. It's interesting."
"Huh, really? That's the first that I know of and he's nice to you?"
Mark nodded, with a small smile, "Yeah, he's a gamer as well. Maybe me you and him could sometime play games together. "
Jack's lips finally moved upward into a small smile, "That would be fun. I think I'd enjoy that. What's his name anyway?"
"Felix."
"Ah, cool." Jack sighed softly, and closed his eyes.
"Do you need to sleep?" Mark asked, before lying his own head on the pillow, lying face to face with Jack.
"I might be exhausted, but I like hearing you talk, so I don't want to sleep," he murmured causing Mark to snort.
"Oh yes," he made his voice dramatically deep, "You like my voice do ya?"
Jack laughed a little, opening his eyes to see Mark grinning, "I like your normal voice, weirdo. "
Mark gasped, "I'm offended! How dare you call me a weirdo?"
With a role of his eyes, he chuckled lightly. Mark was incredibly happy to hear some life from the other, and was so glad to be able to make him at least a little happy.
"I'll call you a weirdo because I can and you are one. "
"But the question is, am I weird? Or are you the weird one for calling me weird?"
Similar words were continued to be said, all for about twenty more minutes when Jack slowly dozed off into a light sleep. Mark knew he couldn't stay all night with him unfortunately, but for now, he'd close his eyes and stay by Jack's side until he was told he had to leave.
