It had been three days since the fight and I hadn't talked to Finn or Millie. I didn't take the jacket, I knew how much it meant to him. Gaten, Caleb, Noah, and I were in the living room, planning the death of the King's second-in-command. "Heather will be at the gala from nine to three. We have to strike around midnight. There'll be a fireworks display and no one will pay attention to us. I say Sadie and I go in to do the job. You two are too injured, same goes for Finn, and Millie isn't a warrior." Noah said, writing some stuff down. "It's only two hundred miles from here. I say we leave Gaten and Millie here." Gaten threw his hands in the air at Caleb's words. "We might need a medic so Finn has to go." Noah said, looking at me. I huffed. "You have a point but I'm not happy about it." Noah rolled his eyes and finished his list of things we were going to need. "We have everything we need. We won't need you for hacking so you won't need to bring anything, Sadie." Gaten said, scanning the list. "Good, when do we leave?"
"Wait, one thing, do you still have that dark turquoise dress?" Noah asked. "Yeah, do you still have the matching bowtie?" He nodded. "Good. I can tie the dress into pants when I need to fight so this should go smoothly."
"Also you can hide a lot of weapons." Caleb added. I nodded. "Well, it's already one am so everyone to bed." Gaten said. We were already in our pjs so we were all in bed in no time. "Wanna sneak out?" I asked Noah. "Of course." He whispered back. We walked outside and he was asleep in no time.I sat on the couch, watching her dance, breathlessly. She moved gracefully along to the music. I was completely under her spell. She danced for a few minutes, or maybe they were hours, perhaps even days. We pushed our beds together and she slept in my arms. I held her close, protecting her from the cruel world. We were happy. Then the door slammed open and Finn walked in. Well, what was left of him. He looked as if he'd been skinned alive and then drowned. He grinned at me and pulled her out of my arms. I watched breathlessly as he kissed her. She let him and she slowly transformed into as much of a monster as him. "Millie..." I whispered. She turned around, looking like she'd forgotten I existed. "What do you want, Captain?" She said in Jenny's voice. A voice I knew way too well. Jenny ran into the room, her face mangled like it had been the last time I'd seen her. "You should've told me not to, Captain. You should've protected him yourself."
"No. No! You made me let you."
"You should've died, not me."
"You wanted it."
"You know, I didn't die until fifteen minutes later. Fifteen minutes of pain so bad that I begged for a bullet. And you never pulled the trigger."
"Jenny, I-"
"YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED."
"No!"
"It should have been you."
"No, I-"
Millie pulled away from Finn. "She's right Sadie, you don't belong with us. You're a murderer."
"So is Finn."
"That was an accident and you know it." He shot back, pulling Millie closer to him by her waist.
"Sadie!" They all yelled. "Sadie! Wake up!" They all stared at me with a blank, dead expression. "Sadie!"I shot up, head butting a frantic Noah who had been trying to wake my up. I brought a hand up to my cheek and felt tears. "Sadie, what happened?"
"It should've been me." I sobbed, getting up. I had to go, leave. I didn't care that it was midnight, I ran into the woods. "SADIE!" Noah yelled before getting up. But he was slower, always had been, and I managed to shake him in half an hour.I woke up somewhere in a clearing a few hours later. I didn't remember when I'd passed out. I stared up at the sky before remembering the previous night. I had to get back to the house, we had a mission today and Noah was probably worried sick but covering for me. I checked where the sun was and estimated it was about 9.30 am and I knew that I'd been running North most of the night so I knew to run South now. In an hour I reached the house. I crept to the back and, with my knife, picked the lock on our bedroom window. I stepped inside and locked the window behind me, getting into bed just as I heard Gaten and Noah approaching. "She's not feeling too well, if she doesn't respond to the knock, we shouldn't go in." Noah said, seemingly calm but I heard the nervous edge in his voice. He knocked on the door. "Sadie?"
"Come in, I'm dressed." I replied and the door opened, revealing the two guys. "Hey Sadie, you feeling any better?" Noah asked, keeping up the act in front of the others. "Yup, you guys save me any breakfast?"
"Of course we did." Gaten replied, pulling me to my feet and walking back to the living room. I walked in and Millie and Finn immediately looked the other way. "We're leaving in ten minutes so you're gonna have to pack quickly, Sads." Caleb said, grabbing the van keys from the hook next to the door and going outside to perform the last few checks. "I'll eat on the road, lemme go pack real quick." Noah stealthily followed me to our room. "Any tips on how to take a dress somewhere without it getting folds?" I asked him when we were inside. "Just hang it on the railing on the inside of the van."
"Thanks, Noah." I said, blowing him a kiss. "Are you gonna tell me about your nightmare?" He asked, leaning in the doorway. "I'd rather not."
"You were screaming No and the C-word in your sleep."
"It was Jenny."
"Ah, I get it."We walked outside and stepped into the van a few minutes later, me claiming shotgun to avoid Finn. He still looked horrible because of the fight. He shot me a glare as Caleb started the engine and I waved goodbye to Gaten while Millie looked everywhere but at me. And then we were off.
