"Okay fuck this, you two are gonna talk to each other wether you like it or not." Caleb said after half an hour of silence. "Noah, grab Sadie and stuff her in the back with Finn." He instructed, pulling over at a restaurant. "Noah, don't you dare..." I said, flipping Caleb off. But Noah was stronger than me, always had been, and twenty minutes later I was in the back with a few new bruises on my legs. "I hate you, you know that?" I mumbled, glaring at Noah through the rear view mirror. "Yea I do. Now talk to each other." Finn and I sat in opposite corners, as far away from each other as possible. "Fine, I'll start for you." Caleb said, partially turning around until I yelled at him to keep his eyes on the road. "Hi, I'm Sadie, I'm madly in love with your girlfriend and angry about life. Also I wasn't home last night but Noah covered for me." Noah and I both looked at him with a slightly shocked expression. "Hi, I'm Finn, you beat me up really badly a few days ago and I still haven't forgiven you for the death of my ex."
"I was not myself." I said, remembering that day. I remember all my kills. Finn's, at the time, girlfriend was painful. "You keep saying that, but what if, by now, the killer I met is who you are."
"I'm not voluntarily a killer." I said, thinking of Noah's words. "You said that before yet here we are, on our way to an assassination that you will be carrying out. And you only brought a medic in case you get hurt."
"Lieutenant Heather won't be hurt, he'll be dead. I'd say that's beyond your medical expertise."
"And who will kill him? And why does he even have to die?"
"I'm going to kill him. And he has to die for what he's done. He has to die for the abuse of hundreds of kids and the deaths of dozens. He has to die for killing my parents."
"Well if we're killing people because they killed parents, we should all be dead, except for Caleb."
"Well maybe you should just shut the fuck up and not talk about things you know nothing about. Like my childhood. Oh wait, you did know the King was torturing me and training us to be soldiers."
"I told you, I didn't know it was that bad. Things are different when you're royal."
"Oh so how you were raised caused you to do some horrible stuff? Funny because that's not an excuse I'm allowed to use." I turned away from him after that statement and picked up Graceling. I was reading it for the third time. The silence had only gotten more awkward and I was relieved when Noah made Caleb pull over so he could switch seats with me.A few hours later Caleb pulled over next to a motel on the edge of town, a few miles from where we needed to be. "We're gonna keep the van here and walk to the party." Caleb said, beginning to stuff some medical stuff in a bag. "Noah, Sadie, get dressed and throw some sweatpants over it. Finn, grab all the medical supplies you can find." We all got up to do as we were instructed. I put on the inconveniently long dress and turned around so Noah could zip me up. I helped him with his bowtie and stepped into my flats. Caleb added just a touch of makeup as I gave Noah instructions for my hair. Less than ten minutes later we were all set and I quickly tied my dress in a way that it functioned like pants. Noah and I both concealed as many weapons as we could and put on tracksuits over our clothes. We all jumped out the van as Caleb handed us our fake IDs. After twenty minutes of walking, Noah and I side by side, Caleb switching between us and a very grumpy Finn, we arrived at the museum where the gala was being held. "Okay guys, good luck in there." Caleb said, hugging us both. "When have we ever failed an assassination?" I asked him, taking off my sweatpants and untying my dress. "There's a first time for everything." He said, taking our clothes and stuffing them in a bag. I straightened Noah's bowtie and took him by the arm, calmly walking up to the museum with our IDs in my clutch.
"Names?" The guard asked, pulling out his guest list. "Barbara Holland plus one." I replied, pulling out my ID. "And what's the plus one's name?" He continued, glancing at my ID. "Charlie Byers." Noah replied, flashing him his ID. "You may enter." We walked into the impressive main hall, both checking for exits and looking for Heather. I spotted him after five minutes and tugged on Noah's arm slightly. "Champagne?" A waiter asked us, prematurely interrupting our conversation. "No thank you, I'm trying to quit." Noah said, trying to get the man to leave. "You, miss?" I smiled at him and rubbed my belly. "I shouldn't..."
"Ah, congratulations." He left after that and Noah raised an eyebrow at me. "Pregnant, really?"
"Shit, I lost him." We both subtly looked around. "We should go talk to some people so we won't look suspicious." He proposed. "You remember the technique?" He nodded and we walked up to a seemingly rich couple. "Hello, nice seeing you two again." Noah started, startling them. "Oh, yes, likewise."
"I'm sorry, names aren't my forté, what were yours again?" I asked, looking sincerely interested. The woman smiled. "Mary and John Winifred."
"Did you not remember the Winifreds, darling?" Noah asked me, smiling down at me. "Must be the hormones." I replied, smiling back. "Oh, how rude of me." Noah said, looking back at John and Mary. "Barbara and Charlie Byers."
"I'm not a Byers yet, dear." He fondly rolled his eyes and the other two laughed lightly. We made small talk about the weather and the gala for a while until Noah spotted Heather again. He poked me and I excused myself, Noah following me. "Okay, they said he's gonna be giving a speech on the podium in ten minutes. I say we find a way to the balcony and make a long-range shot. I'll take the shot while you keep the guards away. My hand is steadier and you're wearing a suit." He nodded and we headed for the exit we'd seen earlier that led to the stairs to the podium. I tied my dress back into pants and climbed the stairs. After ten boring minutes of waiting alone until Heather climbed the stage, people were gathered in the main hall, in front of the podium. I cocked my gun and took my position as Heather climbed the stage."Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for being here tonight-"
I shifted slightly.
"I look around at all the priceless pieces here and I think 'this needs to be preserved'"
I took aim.
"If our history is lost, we are lost. Our history is simply who we are."
I readied myself and was about to pull the trigger.
"Wouldn't you agree, Captain Sink."
