-Skylar's POV-
I tried calling someone I knew I could talk to - my brother David. He was friends with Anthony, I just never really got to know him until Kalel introduced me to him. The phone rang and rang, but David never picked up. I sighed and hung the phone on the receiver.
I turned around and saw Anthony messing with his swelling ankle. I walked over to him and bent down beside him, looking at the ankle for myself.
"Ouch!" He shouted when I touched it. I retracted my hands almost immediately and looked up at him, "It hurts."
"No, duh!" I remarked as I rose to my feet and walked into the kitchen, opening the cabinets, looking for one full of medicine and hopefully a first aid kit. I heaved a sigh when all there was in the cabinets were plates, bowls, and glasses.
"Did you find anything?" He inquired. I turned around and shook my head no.
"Call 911 then," He suggested, "They'll send an ambulance and I can be taken to the hospital."
"Do you not remember what that bus driver told us to do?" I remarked, "He said don't leave under any circumstances."
"Well my foot is going to get amputated if it doesn't get some sort of treatment!" He yelled at me. I put my hand on my forehead and started to pace back and forth.
I stopped abruptly and turned so I was facing him, "How about we just clean it up a little and...and then I'll figure out something."
He rolled his eyes and got his crutches under his arms and rose to his feet. He made his way over to me and walked past me, up to the phone. He picked it up and dialed three numbers, pinning the phone between his ear and shoulder.
"No!" I shouted as I tried to get the phone from him. He jerked away from me.
"Hello? Yes...I..." I grabbed for the phone unsuccessfully, "I'm Anthony Padilla and I..." Just then, he went too far and the phone snapped from the receiver and he was disconnected. I picked up the other end of the phone and waited for him to realize it. "I'm in this house with a broken ankle and..." He paused for a second, "H-hello?" He looked back and saw me. "Skylar! Why'd you disconnect me?"
"You did that yourself," I answered, throwing the cord down on the ground, "And he said don't leave the house under any circumstances."
"He's a stranger, Sky! And since when have you listened to anyone but yourself?" He retorted angrily. I went silent. "Look, Skylar, I don't like the situation we're in. I don't understand it. And I don't know why you believe him. He's crazy. We don't know this guy but he seems to know every goddamn thing about us. Doesn't that creep you out the slightest bit?" Before I could answer, he continued, "He says there are things coming after us. What things? What the hell did we do to get things coming after us? And where's Kalel? She's completely gone and I...I'm scared she's dead. Just like Ian." He sighed and used his crutches to walk over to me, "This situation doesn't make any sense at all. How could something so terrible happen after such an amazing day? To a group of people who have done nothing but live life?" I remained silent. "This can't be real. It's got to be a dream." He held his arm out to me, "Pinch me and I'll wake up. Watch me."
He closed his eyes and waited for me to do as he said. I unwillingly raised my hand and pinched his skin. His scratched up face scrunched up in pain before he opened his eyes. He looked around and heaved a sigh, knowing it didn't work.
"Uh...do it again!" He demand, shutting his eyes once again.
"I'm not pinching you, Anthony," I told him as I crossed my arms over my chest, "This isn't a dream. And this is real." He rolled his eyes and went back over to the couch, plopping down and exhaling exaggeratedly. I sighed, "I'm going to go check the bathroom for a first aid kit, okay?"
"Whatever, Sky, you know everything!" He mocked. I rolled my eyes and found the bathroom. I walked into the hallway and opened all of the doors. The first two were bedrooms, both very dark and very dirty and smelled disgusting. The third door was an office which was like the bedrooms, just that it didn't smell as bad. The fourth one I opened was the bathroom, which, as expected, was just as bad as the others. I gulped and stepped through the threshold.
The sink, tub, and toilet were all stained in this nasty brown dirt. The lights above the mirror above the sink were flickering and the faucet was running. I hesitated to turn to the disgusting handle, but forced myself to do it. I opened the mirror to reveal a medicine cabinet built into the wall, in which a large spider crawled out. I shrieked and jumped back into the wall as the spider disappeared somewhere.
"Are you okay?" I heard Anthony shout from the front room.
"Yeah!" I managed to yell back.
I shivered and stepped forward, looking in the cabinet. And on the top shelf, covered in dust, was a first aid kit. I sighed in relief and grabbed it, running out of the bathroom and back in the front room to find Anthony watching TV. He must've found the remote.
He looked over at me and sat up slightly, "You found one?" I nodded my head as I sat down beside him again. I opened the kit and pulled out some rubbing alcohol and a pad.
"No," He stated, "Do not use that."
"But I have to," I replied as I dabbed the pad with the alcohol on his ankle. He screamed and winced in pain. "Calm the fuck down!" I yelled.
"That hurts like hell!" He boomed.
"Well yeah! It's rubbing alcohol!" I returned as I patted the pad again. He jerked his leg back and screamed.
I glared at him, "Do you want help or not?"
"I want help from people who actually know what they're doing!" He shouted.
"Fine!" I rose to my feet and threw down the pad, "Be in pain for all I care!" I ran away so he wouldn't see me cry. I escaped into the office and burst into tears. All I wanted to do was help him.
