Who knew that the simplest accident could change everything? It changes who one thinks they are, what one thinks is right, what one thinks is wrong, how one feels about someone else... But no matter how much one thinks they've changed, there's always going to be that nagging thought in the back of their heads. That what happened wasn't real...
-Skylar's POV-
It was a cool summer night. The speckled night sky surrounded us as my friends and I drove down the California highway. The windows were rolled down, our hair blew in the wind. We didn't have a care in the world.
Anthony drove while Kalel, his girlfriend, sat in the passenger's seat, resting her head on his shoulder. I sat in the backseat with Ian, Anthony's best friend. He and I started off as friends that night, but evolved into something more as the night went on. It was nothing official, though. We shared a kiss when Kalel and Anthony weren't looking, but other than that, we just sat close to each other and hid our interlocked fingers between our sides.
We were cruising down the almost empty streets when I noticed two small lights heading our way at a fast rate. They were growing larger and larger as we approached them and they approached us. I sat up slightly, squinting my eyes to get a better look at what they might be.
"What's wrong, Sky?" Ian asked me as he sat up as well.
"Those lights..." I uttered as I kept my focus on them, "They look like..."
The headlights were alarmingly close, and they didn't seem to be slowing down. Neither did Anthony. And the next I know, everything went black.

My eyes fluttered open to the sun shining in my face. I painfully moved my hand over my eyes. My body ached all over. I struggled to sit up and saw that Ian was sitting next to me, face pressed up against the back of the passenger's seat. I tapped him to see if he would move. No response. "Ian?" I whispered as I pushed him to the side. I gasped when I saw his face was covered in blood.
Before I could check if he was dead or not, someone grabbed me out of the car. My gaze followed up the person's arm to their face and I saw that it was Anthony. He had a gash on his face, blood staining his shirt, and his arms were heavily scratched.
"Oh my god," He said in relief as he pulled me into a hug, "At least someone's alive. Are you okay, Sky?" He inquired concernedly, stepping out of the embrace and scanning my body for any injuries.
I didn't even answer him. I couldn't. All I could think about was the horror I saw not even a minute ago. "You seemed to be okay, Sky," Anthony concluded, "But..."
"Ian..." I cut him off, looking up into his chocolate brown eyes, "Is he...?"
Anthony shook his head, "I'm not sure."
I turned around and looked at the wreck. The car was completely totaled. The hood was crumpled like a piece of paper and smoke tumbled up into the air. The windshield had shattered into a million glass pieces as well as the driver and passenger windows.
"What about Kalel?" I inquired. She was one of my best friends, and I wouldn't know Anthony nor Ian without her.
"I tried looking for her, but I can't find her," He disclosed to me, "I suspect she either ran away or was ejected from the car."
Just then, the hood exploded into flames. Anthony pulled me back and held me in his arms. The fire soon engulfed the entire vehicle. I looked away, not wanting to see the terrible sight, and started to cry even more.
"Why? Why did this have to happen?" I managed to question through the quick breaths of air I took in.
He didn't answer me for the longest time. And when he did, it was the simple answer of, "Accidents happen."
"Not like this one," I corrected him, looking back at him and frowning, "Not like this one."
-Kalel's POV-
I managed to walk away from the scene almost untouched, whereas last time I checked, everyone else was pretty badly hurt. I was wandering the streets of the closest city, looking for help. Everyone I tried to talk to on the sidewalks ignored me. It was like I wasn't even there.
"Can anyone hear me!?!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. frustrated by the isolation I was receiving.
"I can," I heard from my right. I slowly turned my head in that direction, and from the shadows emerged the bowl-haired idiot my boyfriend called his best friend.
"Ian?" I croaked.
"I'm not Ian," The man answered with a smirk, "Ian's dead." My eyes widened in shock. "I'm just a mere reflection of him, so you don't freak out when you see me."
"Then who are you?" I inquired.
He laughed, "Oh, you don't want to know who I am. But that crash you were in, Kalel," His tone changed drastically, "That wasn't an accident. You and Ian...you weren't meant to die."
"So...you're telling me...I'm dead?" I muttered, slammed by this news.
"No, not really," He answered, "You're not dead, but you're not alive. Your body? It's still at the crash site. But you? You're here." I raised my eyebrow in confusion, "Just think about it," He demanded, crossing his arms over his chest.
I took a second to piece together the pieces, "No!" I screamed, somewhat realizing what he meant, "No! This isn't real!" I cried, tears forming in my eyes, "I'm not dead. Ian's not dead. This isn't real!"
"But it is," He replied calmly.
"How do you know? And why should I trust you?" I screamed at him, "I don't even know who the fuck you are!"
"Kalel, you will know who I am. Soon. But right now, you need to trust me," He grasped my shoulders and held me tightly, "Now, no one can see you but me, Anthony, and Skylar. And you need to save them...before they're killed too."
