Jacob yelped in surprise. Newt stifled a grin as he looked down fondly at the girl.
"Mr Kowalski, meet my niece. Why don't you introduce yourself?" Newt nudged the girl as he put her down.
"Hello there." Jacob said, his heartbeat slowing down.
The young girl said nothing at first, but simply hid behind Newt and peered out solemnly with her bright brown eyes. Then she spoke.
"Hi. I'm Kat."
"Nice to meet you, Kat!" Jacob said, trying to keep his surprise away. Kat let out a giggle as she reached towards Jacob and grabbed his hand. He was speechless for a moment.
"Alright! Time for feeding!" Newt called. Kat squealed in happiness leaving Jacob to become confused.
"F-feeding?"
"Yes, Mr Kowlaski. What do you expect I do with all the animals I nurture?" Newt chuckled to himself. Even Kat smiled. Jacob felt a bit embarrassed.
"Right. Lead on." Jacob muttered. Kat tugged on his hand as she maneuvered her way to the area. Jacob took a glance at the different habitats, dropping the bucket in his other hand in astonishment. He recognized the setting, having travelled there himself - Arizona. Kat let go of his hand as she stepped forward, raising a hand to wave at a beautiful bird. Jacob took a deep breath, admiring the bird. It's wings shimmered with weather patterns, gold shining through white patches that were obviously clouds.
Newt walked past Jacob and put an arm around Kat as he kept his eyes on the bird.
"Come on - come on...down you come...come on."
Kat turned around and said to Jacob,"Frank is a Thunderbird. He can create storms as he flaps his wings." She giggled as she watched Jacob's expression turn to one of awe. Jacob unconsciously took a step forward as he watched Newt stroke the Thunderbird.
"Oh, thank Paracelsus. If you'd have got out that could have been quite catastrophic. You see, he's the real reason I came to America. To bring Frank home."
Jacob took a few more steps, agitating the Thunderbird. It began beating its powerful wings, causing Jacob to flinch back.
"No, sorry - stay there - he's a wee bit sensitive to strangers." Newt said hurriedly. "Here you are - here you are." He cooed at Frank. Newt turned back to Jacob. "He was trafficked, you see. I found him in Egypt, he was all chained up. Couldn't leave him there, had to bring him back. I'm going to put you back where you belong, aren't I, Frank. To the wilds of Arizona." Jacob could see that Newt's face was full of hope as he hugged the Thunderbird. Kat took a few steps back and faced Jacob. Her excited face said it all.
"I can't wait to see him go free!"
Newt throws some grubs into the air and Frank soars after them, sunlight bursting from it's wings. Jacob smiles as the sunlight reaches him, bathing him in the warm light.
