Chapter 13: Promise Revealed!

For a couple of day Romany relaxed and rested in her home, after all she hadn't been in her home for the longest time. But finally she decided it was about time to get out of her house, get some fresh air, and actually do something. She went outside and saw that someone had left a letter at her doorstep, kneeling down she picked it up. The stationary was a nice cream color, the front of the envelope had her name in a sloppy script, and the envelope was sealed tight with a hamburger sticker.

"Why did America leave me a letter?" she asked herself, guessing it was him because it had a hamburger sticker. Going back inside she opened the envelope, and a flurry of confetti fell out of the envelope along with the letter. Picking it back up she read the letter a bit confused as she read it.

You're invited to my Halloween Party!

It'll be this Friday at 7 PM. Wear a costume, no exceptions!

She flipped the letter to the other side, and there was nothing else written. She sighed in exasperation, she had no idea what Halloween was but at least she knew what was a costume. Looking at her calender she realized with utter surprise that it was Friday, immediately she set to work on her angel costume, and finished an hour before the party.

Quickly brushing her hair, adjusting the halo and wings, and putting on the white toga; she made her way to America's home. Arriving with 15 minutes to spare, she looked around her seeing the dark murky black night and the ghoulish decorations outside his home. Knocking rapidly with fear, the door opened to reveal America dressed as a cowboy, a handsome cowboy at that.

Romany blushed ever so slightly and was taken aback when America hugged her, "Glad you made it dudette! Nice costume!" giving her the Hero approves pose. "America?" he nodded for her to continue "What exactly is Halloween?" with that he explained to her what it was. "But although you didn't know what it was I'm still glad you came" he said with a sincere smile, different from his usual hero smile.

Going inside she was greeted by the rest of the countries, and spent the rest of the party actually enjoying herself. For the first time ever she felt like she belonged and had a fun time. It wasn't long before she felt someone tap her shoulder, turning around she saw Germany casually dressed up as Frankenstein but he wasn't green.

"Vould you care to dance?" he asked his cheeks a rosy pink, with a nod and blush on her cheeks she took his hand as he led her to dance. They danced for the longest time almost forgetting everyone around them until the clock struck midnight and with a gasp she realized what day it was.

She excused herself, and quickly asked America if he had a piano anywhere in his house, telling her where it was he went back to partying. While Romany ran through the halls a curious Germany not far behind. Slowly opening the door to the piano room, it creaked open to reveal a dusty but beautiful grand piano.

Taking a deep breath she began to play, pouring her heart into playing as she remembered why she even began this tradition.

Flashback

"What do you mean you're leaving Holy Rome?" a younger Romany asked as tears began to stream down her face. Moments before she had been about to tell Holy Rome that she loved him, and she wanted to be with him forever and always. But before she could, he told her that he was leaving for war and wasn't sure when he would return.

Turning his back on her, he took a step forward and away from the bridge they were on before she could change her mind she held on to his cape stopping him from going. He turned to her to ask her to let go and saw her look down at ground, tears continuing to fall, her bangs covering her eyes.

"Promise me Gabriel. Promise me you'll come back safely so we can at least celebrate your birthday together, please" she pleadingly whispered. He gave her a small smile, gently lifting up her face to look at him, he gave her a kiss on the forehead and nodded.

"I promise you Autumn, I will come back. I promise, so until then please don't forget me" he said quietly, she continued to look at him through her tears and nodded. Taking her cross necklace off her neck, she placed a chaste kiss on it before gently placing it in his open hands and closing them so it wouldn't fall.

"Always wear it Gabriel, and remember that I care about you" she said giving him a weak smile, but a smile nonetheless. He looked at it with surprise and remembered the times he had seen her with it, never had she taken it off because it was her prized possession. Putting it on he gave her one more smile before he walked away. She waved until he was no longer in sight, wiping away her tears with her sleeve she took a shuddering breath before going back inside.

Romany was bouncing with pure excitment, she had the piano room decorated and cleaned to perfection all for the arrival of her sweet Gabriel. She put the finishing touches on her masterpiece a song that she had been composing since he left, and she was happy that she had finished her song in time for his birthday.

She sat down in the plush chair and waited, and waited, and waited. Stepping out of the piano room, she went to ask Mr. Austria if Holy Rome was here yet when she accidently heard the news that stopped her heart. "I'm sorry to tell you sir but the great Holy Roman Empire is dead" she backed away from the door and went back to the piano room.

She sat down at the piano and stared down at her hands, her heart beginning to harden. She remained that way until the clock struck midnight looking at the music in front of her, she began to play. With each note a tear fell, till she abruptly stopped playing and looked out the window and stared at the moon before a scowl fell across her young face. Slamming her hands onto the piano not caring if the others woke up, she cried and screamed.

"HE CAN"T BE DEAD! HE CAN'T! YOU LIAR, YOU BROKE YOUR PROMISE! I HATE YOU HOLY ROME, I HATE YOU!" she held back a sob "I hate you......."

She continued to scream until she could scream no more. With a hoarse whisper she asked "Why did you break your promise? You promised me, and I believed you." Looking up once more at the starless sky she spoke bitterly "I promise you, I will l hurt every country and make them feel my pain. I won't break my promise, you'll see Gabriel."

Flashback End

She finished playing her song and cried just like that first night. But only this time, she was being watched. "I promised you I would make them feel pain, and I won't back out on it" she said through her sobs. Germany's eyes widened and without hesitation opened the door and was greeted by Romany looking at him wide eyed. He had found out the secret and promise she had kept for more than 10 centuries .
