~CHAPTER NINE~

The next night, Matthew took me on a date. I was kind of shocked at first; but gladly agreed, remembering my teeny tiny crush on him. Okay, total exageration; I was practically falling head over heels for this guy!

He took my to the fair that night, and I thought it was really sweet when he gave our left over tickets to some kids who were asking their parents for more - the parents were broke. When he handed the tickets to them, the mother smiled gratefully to us.

We went to go play some carnival games.

We stepped up to the darts and I got three out of three bullseyes; meanwhile Matthew was also getting three out of three bullseyes - on a different board. I laughed and he smiled sheepishly. I guess darts aren't his thing.

"What?" He asked, "That was pretty amazing if you ask me!" I rolled my eyes and turned to the guy in charge of the game.

"Any of the large prizes, pretty lady." He winked. Ew. That's totally disguting! Flirt with someone your own age, grandpa.

I looked over the choices;  a Panda, a Puppy with giant brown eyes, or a Unicorn. I decided on the puppy.

The puppy please," I said sweetly. I heard Matthew scoff and I rolled my eyes, overprotective!

"Don't be so overprotective!" I whined. He scoffed once more and put his arm around my shoulders.

"You wish babe," He said it with a wink. This time it was my turn to scoff.

"Oh god no! You are not a conceided self centered jerk!" I faked panic as he started laughing. I dropped the act and rolled my eyes. Jeez. That's become a regular thing - rolling my eyes, of course!

"I know. I'm just messin' with ya!" He said, after calming down. He placed his arm back around my shoulders so I walked closer to him, my dog on my right, Matthew on my left.

"So, Matthew-" He cut me off and told him to call him Matt. Okay... "Okay. So, Matt, I have a question for you. Make that two questions."

He nodded, "Shoot!"

I looked up at him and braced myself for the shock on his face, "Why did you hate Braydon so much?"

He looked at me, a sad smile on his face, "Because when he came you spent all your time with him and Jake. I felt like you abandoned me." My face and heart fell.

He wasn't the one who drifted away - I was! I felt so bad now, he probably didn't even hate Braydon, it was all just in my head.

"Oh god, I'm so sorry! I didn't realize it and you know, it's just, with him living with Jake and then I being myself and, I just, ya know, got lost and then..." I trailed off my words a jumble.

To my surprise he laughed, "It's okay, Olivia, we're here now and that's all that matters!" I smiled my agree and we started the walk home.

Halfway there he must've noticed that I was washed with exhaustion. He stopped abruptly, causing me to stop as well and look at him, "What?" I asked. He shook his head and lifted me up bridal style.

I squealed with delight, clinging onto him and my puppy, I decided to name him Brownie Boo. He laughed at the name, at first, but then agreed to it.

He whispered in my ear, "Just remember I won Brownie Boo for you." He winked and I laughed, covering my mouth with my hand realising how loud I was. He rolled his eyes at my pathetic attempt  to quiet down. I half punched him, too tired for anything else.

When we got to my porch he set my back and thr ground. We sat there for a minute, in comfortable silence, then he turned to me. Mocking him, I looked at him in the same way. He smiled then moved in towards me.

Our lips collided, and we were kissing. It was a deep, slow, passionate kiss, and it was great. It wasn't needy, or violent at all. It was slow, like the turtle in The Turtle and the Hare. The turtle always wins.

When I was up in my room, I checked my phone and saw I had a text message from Jake that read, "How was the fair? Better than going to DQ?"

Crap!

I had totally forgotten that I told Jake I'd meet him at Dairy Queen. I decided that I would go get some in the morning and stop by his house to surprise him. I felt extremely bad right now; cosidering Jake was my best friend and I ditched him for Matt!

Just then, something popped in my head.

I thought of that night on the beach with Jake when he said he loved me. What if he actually loved loved me and I just screwed everything up because I ditched him to go off in happy, funny, romantic land with Matthew?!

I thought of Matthew's kiss as slow and steady, whereas Jake's was probably fast and needy.

Slow and steady wins the race.
