Chapter 14
I was paddling effortlessly as Delaney was tailing behind me, wondering where the heck I was going. What she didn't know, was that there was a wave coming. She kept an eye on me the entire time, rather than on the water. Stupid.
I stood up and caught the wave and decided to do what I like to call the "Worm Surf" where you go back and forth to make cool ripples. Not to mention it makes you look ten times more amazing that just a regular slice 'n' jump.
I whipped the board to my right and flipped off. I smiled, extremely content with my run and exit. I heard Bray cough-yell, "Show off!" So I stuck my tongue out at him. But I realized half the country probably saw that and regretted it. Now who's stupid? That's right... Me.
The announcer came on, "Contestants we have 30 seconds remaining!" I panicked, they didn't tell us what we got this time, so I have no idea if I'm winning or losing, and by how much. Well this kinda sucks!
I spotted a wave, and hurried over to it. I repeated my last run, but went the opposite way, and snapped the opposite way. I was still standing when the horn blew, I was center of attention. Time to go extreme!
I squatted and back flipped off and grabbed my board from under, and popped up straddling my board. There was an uproar of an applause and I just smiled and waved, what you're supposed to do after you finish an amazing run.
The speakers cackled on, "Attention, Attention. The results will be announced in 3 minutes!" There were more cheers. I swam back to shore and accepted the towel Jake offered me, thankful. I was totally wiped from the effort it took to wow the judges. Hopefully it worked.
I took a handful of grapes that Jason was eating, he opened his mouth to protest, so I gave him a quick peck on the cheek. That shut him up. And also turned his face as red as a tomato! Hah! I busted out laughing as did the others.
"W-what?" He asked, squirming self-consciously.
"You.... Your f-face!!!" I managed between laughs. His face was just so dang hilarious! This was definitely a Laugh Out Loud moment.
By the time we had settled down and stopped laughing, the announcers came back on.
"We would like to congratulate the runner up, Braydon Macbeth who was sporting Green today. Congratulations, Braydon!" He paused to let the cheers die down, "And now, the moment you've all been waiting for, Virginia Beach, your state champion of 2012 is... Drum Roll... Olivia Montgomery!" My jaw dropped to the ground, but my spirits lifted. Oh My God. I just won first place.
I ran up to Braydon and squeezed the life out of him, as he did the same back to me. I laughed and he put me down. We congratulated each other. Next was Jake, then Jason, then Bryan.
Braydon and I walked up to the Award stage and received our trophies, my large, heavy, obese, on compared to Bray's minature statuette. It was a girl riding a surf board. I smiled at the way they made it a girl this time.
When I stepped down I saw Miley throwing a fit at anyone who tried to comfort her. The other guys chuckled a bit too, but not Bryan. Gee, wonder what's up with him?
"It's never felt so good to win," I said.
At the exact same time, Bray said, "I love beating her!"
This caused an eruption of laughter from our small group that caused many people to turn their heads and give us curious looks. Almost immediately, we stopped though. Don't want the winners to be also known as the creepy people.
We were bombarded with the smell of an amazing meal as we entered my house. I smiled - Mom must've known one of us were going to win.
As if on cue, my mother came out of the kitchen, "Oh, honey! I'm so proud of you! Congratulations, Liv! And you too, Bray!" She winked at him. Ew! He just laughed and thanked her.
Derek soon stepped out of the kitchen as well and congratulated the two of us. I noticed Jason was being awfully quiet then it dawned on me. He got second to last place in the boys' run. Ha-ha! And he thought he could beat me!?
We had a delicious meal together, just talking, laughing, letting lose, and enjoying ourselves.
Luckily, during the whole meal, no one brought up the topic of Dale or Matthew. I silently thanked god for that. Man my life was too complicated.
At the end of dinner, we all stood up and sang "We Are the Champions" and swayed our arms. I smiled at all of us eating like a family. It just felt right, like we belonged. It didn't feel awkward, and honestly, I felt a weight being lifted off my shoulders when Matthew and I broke up today. It made me feel like I was in charge, and I can do what I want.
I smiled as I fell asleep that night, not having a care in the world. It just felt good to sink into my soft mattress after such an "eventful" day.
