I looked at all the people around me. When we entered the private part of the beach everyone stared at us. The Witches. Most of the time we wouldn't be caught dead at a party organized by Shawn and his friends, but that week was different. On Friday's we usually went to parties in the next town over but for some reason there weren't any parties that weekend. I guess it was destiny or something.
"I'm thirsty, anyone want anything?" asked Ashley. "I'll have something with a lot of alcohol please" said Tamara. Everyone looked at her. She never drinks alcohol when her mom is home. She usually has to take care of her and she gets in trouble for drinking. I glared at them and assumed the message was clear. She was alone that night. Everyone else asked for an alcoholic drink except Vincent and I, who are the only ones from our friends who do not drink. We both asked for a coke.
After Ashley came back with our drinks we all went to dance in the moonlight. I stayed behind watching them be crazy and dance as if no one was watching them. I started smiling while looking at them and got startled when someone said, "Hey!" I jumped a little and the person next to me laughed. "Jeez, you are really paranoid Ms. Reynolds. Next time I'll send a text." I roll my eyes at Shawn. "Haha, very funny. Nice party by the way." He smiled. "Oh, you like it? We didn't think you'd come actually. We thought you went out of town on Friday nights." I giggled. "I'm flattered. You wanted us to come to your party? We are so honored that the Idiots of Town High wanted us at their party." Shawn just chuckled and shook his head. He was about to go when the "Despacito" remix came on. I started dancing when Justin Bieber's solo began.
He looked at me and said, "You wanna dance?" I looked at him and said, "Are you crazy?" He smiled with his beautiful smile and said "Yes." He took my hand we started dancing. "How do you dance so good with this kind of music?" He said while almost dying trying to move to the music. "Well, I happen to be part Latina. My mom is actually from Puerto Rico." He looked at me strangely. "Really? You do kinda look Latina. And move like one." He smirked a little with the last remark, while he stared at my butt moving. We danced until the song ended. He then bowed a little and said half laughing "It was a pleasure dancing with you Miss Reynolds." I then laughed a little too and said "The pleasure was all mine, Mr. Becker." He sticks his middle finger at me for calling him by his last name. I left the spot smiling like an idiot. I went back to my friends.
Michael took my hands and started dancing with me. He used this as an excuse to talk to me. "Emma, you really shouldn't hang out them, you know? Any of them. Not even Shawn. You know what they are capable. You remember what they did to us in freshman year, right? You remember what he did to you in middle school, don't you?" I shivered at thought of what Shawn did to me in middle school. "I do remember. And it's not like I'm giving Shawn a friendship bracelet. We were just talking and dancing." Michael rolled his eyes. "Yeah, you're right. You were just dancing awfully close while he looked at your butt and while you talked and laughed." I looked at him with my "are you kidding me" face. "It was a reggaeton song, that's how you dance that type of music. But if it makes you feel any better, I won't interact with him or any of them for the rest of the party. Now, are we good?" He just smiled and nodded. He let go of my hands and I left to go to the bathroom.
After that, we stayed for about 2 more hours until the police came, aware that there was underage drinking at the party. We all ran to the car and John started driving, since he was the only one of us who could drive safely and fast at the same time.
John drove all of us home. When we arrived at Tamara's house she went right in, practically running inside. As I opening the car door John stopped me and asked me, "Is she okay? I mean, we all know she only drinks when her mom isn't home and if she drinks it's only a little. What happened?" I sighed and looked outside the window, and wondered if I could tell him. I pressed my lips together and looked at him. "Her mom is a drug addict. This is why Tami takes such good care of her. Every three or four months she goes crazy and takes a lot of drugs. She's in the hospital right now. She'll be out in a few days." John looked at me as if he was going to cry.
"If this has happened multiple times, how can she still be living with her?" I wiped a tear from my cheek. "Well, her dad offered to take her in but she told him that she couldn't just leave her alone. And besides, she's still mad at him. I don't think she would want to go live with him." He looked out the window. It was a lot to take in. "Did she tell you all this?" I shake my head. "No, I just heard her talk on the phone with her dad the other day." He just nodded and said something like "oh" under his breath. I hugged him and thanked him for the ride. "Good night, sleep well." I said. He just nodded again and said "See you tomorrow." And he left.
