I wake up to find myself lying in my bed.
I try to sit up, but a sharp pain in my stomach makes me scream and I lay back down. I notice a large bandage wrapped around my waist.
Erika comes rushing over to me. "Laina, how do you feel?" she asks.
I groan. "There's a lot of pain," I tell her. "What happened?"
She sits down next to me on the bed. "Well, Ivan told us that last night you saw some man beating up a girl and that you attacked him. Then he started hitting you and he stabbed you. You blacked out and Ivan managed to scare the man away before anything else could happen. We rushed you to the hospital but all they could do was patch you up, so we brought you home to wait for you to wake up."
Now, I remember clearly what happened. "Where's Ivan?" I ask, worried. "Is he okay?"
"He's in a much better condition than you, but there's a few cuts. He said he's feeling fine."
"What about the girl?"
"She was unconscious, too, so we didn't know where to take her. We got her patched up and she's asleep in my room. Hopefully when she wakes up we can figure out where she lives and take her home."
I relax a little, knowing that the girl is okay. Thank God we were there. I try not to think about what could have happened to her if I didn't jump on the man.
"Can I see Ivan?" I ask Erika.
She holds my hand. "I think you should rest a little, Laina."
"Erika, I've been unconscious since last night. I think that's enough sleep. Please, I need to see him."
Sighing, Erika gets up and leaves the room. A few minutes later, Ivan opens the door and walks in.
"Laina! You're okay!" he says, rushing up to me.
I try to sit up again, forgetting that I'm hurt. I cry out in pain and Ivan grabs my arms and helps me back down. "Please, stay where you are," he tells me. Then he bends down and kisses my forehand.
"You're crazy," he tells me. "You know that? I should have never let you do that." His smile changes into a frown. "I'm supposed to be the boyfriend and protect you from everything."
"Woah, woah, you are that," I tell him. "I was just so angry at the man for hurting the girl that I just ran at him. I didn't even think about it. How were you supposed to protect me from that?"
"I don't know, I just-"
"And I saw you run after him right before I blacked out. You were protecting me, even if you don't realize it."
"Well, you never should have come out of that with a single injury."
"Stop thinking that it's your fault. It's not. You're still the greatest boyfriend I could ever ask for."
A smile forms on Ivan's face.
"I love you so much," he whispers, and kisses me.
"I love you, too," I respond.
Just then, I hear footsteps running down the hall and there's a knock on my bedroom door.
Ivan opens the door and Erika walks in. "The girl is awake," she tells me. "She wants to talk to you, but I told her that you're in no condition to get up. But, she insists."
I nod. "You don't have to do this," Ivan says.
"No, no, I need to," I reply.
Ivan helps me sit up and I wince in pain. I wrap my arms around his shoulder and lean on him as I limp down the hallway towards Erika's room.
When I walk inside, I take a good look at the red-haired girl laying on the bed. I hadn't gotten a good look at her last night, so my jaw drops when I see who she is.
"Oh my god," I say. "Marlee!"
