The Give Away

Chapter 3

I got up and brushed my hair, put on my uniform and walked down the stairs in silence with a blank expression on my face. I went to my secret corner and thought as I stared at the clouds, tonight was a full moon and I was really scared. The more I thought about it the more upset I got, I ended up crying with my forehead resting on my knees and my arms around my knees. Robert found me, 'I don't want him seeing me like this, he will think I am either trying to get attention or just being a wimp. What ever you do... do not look up' I thought to myself keeping my head on my knees. I felt his strong arm around me and I started to lean into him uncontrollably, I didn't mind as long as he didn't see my face. 'What's wrong?' he asked 'I'm scared. It is a full moon tonight and please don't think I am crazy or anything but every full moon I have a weird nightmare. I mean what if my Aunt comes back and tries to kill me? What if she hurts you or the others? What if' I said, I was starting to panic so Robert cut me off 'Nothing is going to happen, if she tries to kill you then she will have us to deal with. She can't hurt me unless she takes you away but it is so sweet of you to say that. You know that the head master had guards at every door on full moons now don't you?' Robert said reassuringly. 'He does?' I said wiping tears away from my eyes. I hugged him as I leaned on his shoulder 'Thank you' I said 'You're welcome' he replied as he rubbed my shoulder. I kissed his cheek and he blushed, he didn't realise he was. After a bit we left the corner and went to our first class. We had powers class, Robert still had not found his powers. He was such an amazing guy that I just knew he was going to have amazing powers. 'Now students settle down. Take your seats because today we are going to explore our powers and figure out just what we can do! Now, find a partner and start!' The professor said. Jane and I turned straight to each other and Robert and Kieran did the same. Robert and Kieran were best friends, if you didn't know them you would think they were brothers. We partnered up but I realised that neither Kieran or Robert knew their powers, we knew they had them because of what happened when we touched the ring, we just didn't know what they were. 'What do we do?' Robert asked me. 'Go ask the professor, surely he has something to help.' I replied as I tried to do something new with my powers. I was strong in water, metal and earth but for some reason I was not so good with fire and air. 'Who knows, you might have a part of your powers you need to explore' as my professor put it. I tried creating fire, I got a spark but nothing else. 'Come on Hope, you've got this!' Jane said encouragingly. I looked over at Robert, he gave me an encouraging smile and a thumbs up as if to say 'You can do it'. I turned back around and tried again, this time I held fire in my hand. I could feel the heat rising off of the flame as it flickered and burned in the palm of my hand. I could feel no pain where the fire was, I could just feel the heat. I let the flame burn out and straight afterwards I gave Jane a hug, 'I never knew I could do that! Thank you!' I said. 'It's ok' she replied. We practiced for a bit while Kieran, Robert and the professor looked through some books trying to find something to influence their powers. When someone used their powers their eyes started to glow, mine glowed white when I used my powers, Jane's glowed blue, Sara's glowed purple, Lana's glowed pink, Lloyd's glowed green but so far there was no glowing from Robert or Kieran.

Jane and I walked over to the boys and sat next to them. I sat next to Robert and Jane across from us next to Kieran. I felt Roberts hand move closer to mine, I looked up at Robert and he stared into my eyes then nodded at his hand. I held his hand and looked through the book with him, we came across a few interesting powers like healing and flying until we came across invisibility and Kierans eyes started to glow 'Wait, Kieran look' Jane said pointing at the page. 'What?' He replied 'Kieran. 'Your eyes, their glowing!' Jane exclaimed 'they are?' He asked 'Yes, they are glowing orange. Kieran you can turn invisible. Who knows though, there may be more to you than what we see.' the professor said. 'How?' Kieran said 'Come, I will teach you' the professor said as he walked to his desk. Kieran followed with Jane at his side, Robert and I kept looking through the book until we got to the rare chapter, he and I looked at each other worriedly. I gave a weak smile trying to tell him not to worry. We kept looking through the book and found the ability to walk through objects and his eyes started to glow, just as he was about to turn the page I put my hand on the page. We looked at each other and I smiled and nodded with joyful tears welling up in my eyes. We hugged 'what colour?' He asked excitedly. 'Blue, aqua blue. Robert this is amazing' I said. I held his hand, I felt his grip tighten in my hand. We walked over to the practice area and we tried to get him to access his powers. I made a wall out of the rocks in the room and moved it in front of him. 'You can do this. Be careful' I said. I could hear him saying quietly to himself over and over 'concentrate'. He braced himself and walked towards the rock wall. The first few times his hands hit the wall until his last try. He walked straight at the wall and walked through, he came out the other side with a surprised look on his face. I looked at him with pride and joy, I looked over to Jane. Where was Kieran? She was clapping and smiling, 'what?' I was so confused. Then I saw Kieran appear out of thin air and kiss Jane on the cheek then disappear again reappearing again sitting on the table before disappearing, again. 'Clearly he has his powers under control' I thought with a smile. I turned back to Robert, he held his arms out and I ran towards him. I hugged him and he picked me up, spun me around and put me back on the ground. He had never done that before, it was so sweet. He looked so happy, and I was happy for him.
