I did not choose you
you chose me
you plucked me from a field of blooming flowers, stunting the growth of my heart in the process
you placed me in a vase, filling it with poison all the while teaching me to drink it as water
I learned the taste just the same and never questioned why
I never questioned your controlling actions
I never questioned why you wouldn't let me leave my bed
I never questioned why you wrapped your hands around my lungs, breathing in every ounce of air you sucked from my soul
I never questioned you because you taught me not to
you showed me the consequences of questioning the unknown
you showed me the pain of unreasonable expectations being shattered by the trust we give
you gave me hope by opening the curtains, knowing damn well you would never let me go outside
you will never let me feel the sun against my skin, warming every inch of my broken heart
you are depression and you have claimed me
