There's a lot going on this week.
It's Homecoming week, which means it's the highlight week of any regular high-schooler's year. Spirit Week means Spirit days all week where you show off with your friends and post pictures on your page, and a football game where people who normally don't go, go. Homecoming week means a dance at the end of the week. It means memories. It means that Josh and Jenna are going to the dance together, and I'm probably going with Alex.
I'm prepared to spend too much on a dress and shoes I'll probably only wear one time, but I'm not prepared to see another girl in Josh's arms during the Homecoming dance. I was hoping that he would ask me this year—that my plan would have worked and I would be going with him. But it didn't, and I'm not.
Although, on the bright side, I have a gorgeous date. I need not pout. I can't feel too sorry for myself.
There's one last thing that's eating me alive. The day of the Homecoming dance isn't just any old day, no, the day of the Homecoming dance is Josh and Jenna's half year anniversary. The night will mean a lot to them as a couple. It's going to be romantic, and budding with teenage love. It's a reminder of how obsolete I am in comparison.
I'm excited for Homecoming.
The week goes by almost like any other. Josh comes over after school on Wednesday to help me with my AP Calculus homework. He's good at this stuff, and he really likes math. His mind works very meticulously at every task, so he's very good at these long winded math problems. He thinks very technically, and that works to my advantage during times like this. When he comes over, I catch my dad holding him hostage in the kitchen, and bring him upstairs with me. Getting him to help me with homework is my favorite guilty pleasure, and my dad doesn't get to shorten my time with Josh.
Thursday, I'm starting to get nervous that Alex will never ask me to Homecoming even though we're going out, but he does it during lunch. I feel a rush of relief that I won't have to face the night alone.
Friday, I step into school, and the Homecoming magic is in the air. Everyone is so excited, and it changes the usual dreary morning atmosphere into a glowing glittering one. Emily finds me in the hall before class as I'm unloading my books into my locker, and she asks me all about my dress. I tell her about it, all the details, and she excitedly tells me about how Jacob asked her to go with him.
"Me, Jenna, Christina, and Amanda go together every year. We go to the train station and take pictures first, and then we go to dinner, and I was wondering if you wanted to come with us. I happen to know there is enough space in the limo, and Jacob would be so relieved if Alex was there too," she gushes.
I knew the story held up, for I was victim to the flood of photos on all my social media every Homecoming since freshman year. It was all so extra. Most people would think, "Who goes all out on Homecoming? Shouldn't you save that for prom?", but they should see what Jenna's group does for Prom. This isn't even the half of it.
As fun as it sounds, my longtime rivalry with Jenna will likely veto Emily's thoughtful invitation, "I don't know, are you sure Jenna would be okay with me going?" A part of me hopes that Jenna wouldn't let me go. The last thing I want is to spend all night watching her draped over the boy I love. The thought of it makes me feel like rocks are piling up in my stomach.
