When we first came to Riverdale it was the end of the school year, it was too late to join the school so we decided I would go to Riverdale High next year. That gave us a lot of time to find jobs to keep us in the tiny house. It seemed like every day we would get our hopes up only to have them crushed by rejection, it was a small town and it did not many open jobs, and we didn't have enough money to move again. Things took a turn in May, my mom started seeking comfort in bottles of alcohol, which I think is one of the reasons why she did what she did next. One day she sat me down on the couch and said she needed to talk to me, I assumed it was about us being kicked out and I mentally prepared myself. I soon found out it was worse. "Rachel.." she trailed off, taking my hands in her warm ones "you know how we haven't been able to find any jobs?" She asked and I shook my head in response "well I said I would do anything to keep you safe, and that's true." She took a deep breath and continued "I-I joined the serpents, I know it's dangerous and everything but it pays wel...." I could feel all the color drain from my face and everything else she said fell on deaf ears, we had barely moved in but it didn't take long to hear about that terrible gang. I didn't want her to do those things, be involved with those people, or get hurt, what if she died? "Rachel? Rachel?" I heard her voice calling out to me and I snapped out of it a little. I swallowed hard and looked her in the eyes "mom.. no y-you can't" I began but she just shook her head and pulled me into a comforting hug "I promised I would take care of things, don't worry about me okay?" She whispered but I just stared at the wall behind her and held her tightly.
