A/N: Do you prefer Paging Doctor D.N.A. or The Droid Doctor as the title?
Inspecting her latest android, Doctor Page R. Thornbalm absently stroked the android's pale, silvery-blue "skin". This would be the first android that while humanoid, was in no way human. Model #613, or "Lilith", was part of the Pandora project, one of many current projects at Promethus Inc. "Lilith" would be the true first of her kind.
Once the latest model was covered in silicone skin, specialized rubber eyes covered in a thin sheen of gel would be placed in the head, then human hair and nails carved from animal claws. A chip created by her company would then be installed, and the feminine android, "Lilith," would come to life to serve as directed. She was just glad she didn't have to jump through hoops like her predecessors did. After the 2049-2052 robo and droid riots, politicians started to give both more rights, if reluctantly. Page paused stroking the currently bald droid's pate, wondering momentarily if she was harming a fellow being.
Shaking her head dismissively, she thoughtlessly continued to stroke the smooth, alien metal they used for the droids.
When there was a large astroid shower in the mid 2020s, strange alien metals were found in large quantities. Among them were the bluish silver metal, Anitis. Scientists were still figuring out benefits and downsides for each metal. Annitius was the primary metal used in droids, and her family owned all of it.
While many people sported various metallic devices for decades now, ranging from decorative to using them for their health, fully functioning humanesque metal beings was frowned on and feared by many, and a distant dream for the rest. It was almost an unspoken law worldwide for yeas that you drew the line at a solid 10%.
It was literally a slogan at many plastic surgeon companies. Page grimaced, remembering what her grandmother had looked like before they had buried her - she was more full of plastic than those toys popular in the Americas before oil and plastic became almost as precious as water for half a dozen years.
Even now, many human supremacists considered androids and robots 2nd class citizens at best; there to serve. Many of those leading these groups had once been subjected to the same sort of treatment; Page truly didn't understand their mentality.
Still, it was how she earned most of her bread and butter, so she couldn't really judge, especially when water was so hard to come by.
she did try to make sure that the droids went to good homes, but there was only so much you could do. She paused her caressing of the droid beneath her hand, and looked at the droid ruefully. She had tried many different solutions over the years, had pushed many 'revolutionary laws through only because of her wealth, status and power...but it would never be enough for her. They were as much her children as if they came from her womb, and not just her mind and hands.
The door suddenly lit up a bright, neon blue-green, while chirping. "please scan them, Adam."
"Yes, miss." There was a pause, and then "It is your staff, Page. Shall I let them in?"
"Yes dear. Thank you, Adam." I loved Adam, even though few outside my family and close friends understood why. Adam was the first working Android I ever made; #10. Every other droid was based off of him. I was constantly updating him. Lilith was actually being made so he wouldn't be lonely.
The door must have opened while I was deep in thought, because Deb and Aylin were in front of me, causing me to blink confusedly.
"Oh! I'm sorry everyone. I must have been caught adrift again," I drifted off.
"It's alright, Page," Aylin smiled good naturedly. I must have the two best assistant. I grinned in return.
"We brought you coffee and a Italian salad with the money you gave us," said Deb.
"You both know me too well," I mumbled around a mouth full of deliciousness. "Mm," I groaned.
Everyone just laughed, used to my antics by now. After a hour, people usually were. "Did everyone else eat," I tried to get out as I wolfed down the last of the heavenly salad and proceeded to inhale the coffee---which I should probably just inject into my blood via an IV at this point.
After a few chuckles and giggles at my antics and mothering, they all chorused: "Yes Mother Dearest!"
"Okay! Sorry I asked!" I dashed towards the cleaning cabinet for the heavy duty disinfectant, I brush the crumbs and grease I had left, while wiping myself free of debris. I must have looks silly, since I heard laughter - even from Adam (traitor!) "Ha ha, yes very funny! Well, we do need a sterile surface to work on, so......"
Stifling laughter, Deb took the material away from me, and started to clean. Why don't you head for the washroom, while I take care of this, yeah?"
Smiling, I nodded, exiting the room. As I left, I saw Adam. "So, my agony amuses you, does it," I fake scowled.
"Not if it was actual pain, no," he smiled Indulgently.
