Eleven

The Plan

  I don't know when I fell asleep, but when I wake up, everybody else is getting up, too. Our breakfast is the same kind of plant we ate last night. Everybody is quiet, picking at their food, until Rylan says, "So gang, what are we gonna do today? I think we should pull a prank on the Careers."

"Don't you think a prank is a bit uneffective?" Sienna is looking doubtful.

"Well," Cypress begins slowly, "We could do something like steal their food and replace their whatever they're drinking with the poisoned water..."

"I think we shoud take their stuff," I say.

  So in the end, we decide on Cypress's idea, but this is how it really goes:

Day one: Spy on the Careers by hiding in the trees.

Day two: Distract Careers by making Sage get their attention and making sure they are chasing her. Meanwhile, Rylan, Sienna, and Cypress will take their food and replace their whatever they're drinking with poisoned water. To alert Sage that the mission is complete, they will light a fire.

Day three and four: Watch what happens and laugh evilly.

    Since today is "day one,"  we take the woods and sneak to the Career camp from behind. There's a big tree with it's branches sticking out above the camp. Cypress and I scale the tree easily, but Sienna and Rylan aren't so good. So instead, they find some huge boulders and hide there. Today's our lucky day, because some have gone out to do some dirty work. We observe very carefully, and we find out a lot of things. Such as:

1. The stuff the Careers drink is edible.

2. They have apparently found wild onions.

3. They have matches. (From sponsors.)

4. They have dried fruit. (From sponsors.)

5. They also apparently have found dandilion greens.

Basically, they have everything we need and want. When they notice an unfortunate tribute, they take off.  That's when we leave. On the way to our camp, Cypress sees something. "Hey, guys, I think this plant is wild carrot," she says.

 It's not. It's actually poison hemlock. "That's not wild carrot, Cypress." I say. "It's hemlock. It's leaves don't have hairy leaves. As soon as you eat it, it will kill you."

"Wait," Rylan snatches the hemlock. "If we take it, and 'accidentally' give it to the Careers, and they think it's wild carrot, and they eat it, well, you'll know what happens."

     We take it, climb the rock wall to our own little camp, and then Cypress wants to set up some defenses.  So she gets to work and in around an hour and a half our camp is completely booby trapped. One trap, my personal favorite, is the one where there's this hole and Cypress covers it with leaves and sticks, so when somebody steps on it, they'll fall right in. Sienna is convinced that there is more plants to eat out there, so we all start looking for more food. We find nothing, besides more of the plant we ate.

      Just then, a tribute drops down from a tree a few feet away. I pull out my knife, Rylan pulls out a sword, Sienna grabs her spear, and Cypress is in her fighting stance. This tribute is especially buff, and three fourths of is me saying, run, Sage, run. Get away, as fast as you can. Run! While the other part is saying, your friends are counting on you, and so is Rue. You want to win for Rue. So do it!  So I stay and fight. We all attack at the same time, but it seems like this guy is going for Rylan. He and Rylan get into this fight, but the tribute has the upper hand. Rylan gets pinned against a tree and we all think he's going to die. But instead, Sienna grabs her spear, and without thinking, she plunges it down the tributes back. It's not very pretty. A cannon fires. Sienna takes out the spear in shock. "I killed someone!" She says in panic. "I actually killed someone!"

  After we get Sienna all calmed down, it's getting dark. We eat another meal of the plant. The anthem plays. Only one dead, and that's the one Sienna killed. He is from 5.

  The next day, we eat a quick meal, then our plan goes to action. I run past the guy on watch, and he alerts the Careers. They start chasing me, and I start running as fast as I can, in the opposite direction. I run up trees and when they are starting to climb up, I climb down. I run and climb trees for around fifteen minutes, and then, I see the smoke in the air. That's when I climb up to the top of one tree and start to jump from tree to tree. The Careers give up and start for the fire. But I know that they are safe. When I arrive  at the camp, the rest of them are there and I'm out of breath. And all of them are grinning from ear to ear. "So, how did it go?" I ask.  Apparently, right after I left, they went inside the Career camp and swapped every canteen with poisoned water, took all the food and necessary supplies and left the hemlock there.

    We sit down and split the food. I get an onion, some dried fruit, and another knife. The stuff in the canteens is juice. What kind of sponsor sends something as luxurious as juice? Well, it might not be as luxurious in the Capitol, but it is for me. While we eat, we listen for cannons. Suddenly, one fires. And another one. We stare at each other with excitement. If this was the water, by now they would have thrown them away. One more cannon. That was probably the hemlock. We might get defeated later, but now, we are victorious.

Author's Note: I am SO sorry I have short chapters. Very short chapters... I hope you enjoyed this one! I try to have longer chapters, but it never seems to work. Also, I got the hemlock from this wilderness survival website. :)
