Asher

Every time we hear a cannon, we flinch. So far we've heard two. We are sitting around a little fire, when another one goes off. It's so unexpected, that we all jump. Cypress bumps my wrist. I wince. It's getting better, but it still hurts. Rylan appears. "Hey, guys. I'm done with watch. Sage, your turn." I grab my fanny pack, buckle it on and try to climb over the wall. Once I make it over, I climb the tree. I sit on a branch and lean back. I look up at the clouds. One looks like a dog. And another one looks like a vase.....

I guess I dozed off, because when I open my eyes, it's raining. Really hard. I hear a cannon fire. I freeze. That only means one thing. Other tributes. There's  faint crunching noises. I climb down and start to tip toe in that direction. I do stupid things like that sometimes.

"Myra?"

I duck behind a large tree.

"Myra, where are you? Myra!"

My heart starts to pump. Again.

"Myra, this isn't funny! "

The voice gets closer.

"Myra! It's me, Asher! Where are you?"

I peek around the tree. "Myra?"

"Um, I'm not Myra..." I pull my knife out and back away.

It's a boy with curly dark hair and dark eyes. He looks around. "Did you kill her?"

"No! I didn't kill anybody! What do you mean?" I think about shouting for help.

"Myra! Where is she?" The boy glares at me.

"I don't know! I heard a cannon before..." I glance at him and swallow.

"What? No. No. Myra can't have died. Can't." He looses his composure and starts to sob. That comepletely melts my heart, seeing as I know how it feels to lose a loved one.

"Hey, it's okay," I try to comfort him, but we both know that it isn't. "My name's Sage. What's yours?"

"Asher."

"Come with me. I know a place."

He stands up,and takes a deep breath.  The rain is getting to my hair so I pull up a hood. "I'm allies with other people, is that okay?" I look at him.

Asher shrugs. "As long as they're awesome and won't kill me."

"Oh, they're awesome, alright." I smile.

After that, we walk in scilence.  After a while, we reach the rock wall. "Okay, now we have to climb over it, 'kay? I'll go first." I heave myself up, but my foot nearly slips on the slippery rocks. "Watch out!" I call down. "It's really slippery." I hop over.

"Oh, thank goodness!" Sienna rushes over. I can't help but smile. Sienna is so nice and caring. "Hey, I brought someone."

"Who?" Rylan asks.

As if on cue, Asher hops over the wall. "Guys, this is Asher. He's from..." Then, I realize I haven't asked him where he's from. "Asher, where are you from?"

"District Eight."

"Oh. Well, he's from eight."

Sienna comes up. "Hi! I'm Sienna. District ten."

"   Oh," I say to Asher, "Well, that's Sienna"-I point to Sienna-"And Rylan,"-I point to Rylan-"and Cypress." I point to Cypress. She says "Hi" so quiet you can hardly hear. Rylan waves. Asher and Rylan hit it off instantly. I guess it's because Rylan has been stuck with girls. Sienna hands out food and we all eat. The rain stops and by then, it's already dusk. The anthem plays and the dead tribute lights up in the sky. Myra. She was really pretty and she was from District 8. I notice Asher staring hard at the fire. I can't help but think that he loved her.
