He's...  he's...  Erwin couldn't believe it.  He didn't want to.  He'd heard others talking about meeting previous versions of themselves.  He'd heard how they'd carried the burden of the initial drafts only to be tossed away.

The man offered a sad smile. I see you've figured it out.  I'm Er, your predecessor.

Who is he? Erwin nodded to Ed. 

The blockhead?  That's Ed, he's the human form of the great white shark from a book called Deep Wizardry.  He's uncharacteristically a tool, although this isn't your average situation.  He thinks that if he acts like a jackass, he'll be less prone to find Veronica.

Is Veronica his lover?

At this, Er shifted uncomfortably.  It's a really long story.  I am going to tell you it, but it's very long.

How long?

Longer than Harry Potter.  A string of smoky energy danced around his fingers.
