To make an Oath

Eurydice sat on the kitchen chair, staring outside, she could vaguely hear the sound of TV, could make out the words which were being spoken. But she didn’t need to listen; she already knew what was being said. She picked up her remote control and quickly changed the channel. It made her sick thinking about what was being said, it made her sick thinking about what she was going to do. However, changing the channel didn’t change her thoughts; Eurydice tried to focus on the Channel with little success.

“This is where the country England used to stand....a beautiful place.....rain was constant....”

She could still not focus. She couldn't think straight, she couldn't bear to listen to the voice on TV. She stood up, pushing a hand through her already messy hair and picked up her mug taking a quick sip from the now cold drink and glanced again, outside her window.

What if I don't go?

A little voice in her head whispered, but as much as Eurydice didn't want to go, she had to. She couldn't not go- could she?  She paced around her kitchen, her eyes now turning towards the clock. The day had come too soon; the seconds were going too quickly. For a second, Eurydice stopped and stared at the remote control, she picked it um, her face blunt and changed the Channel, back to the main.

"And yes! There I can see them now! The young girls are now assembling, oh what a beautiful day this is, I never get tired of this moment here right now! Hahaha! Look at them! Heads high-"

Eurydice's eyes hardened, her fists clenched. How dare they- how bloody dare they? She took in a deep breath, realizing her clenched fists were shaking and glanced again outside.

Maybe they weren't going to-

Knock Knock

Eurydice turned sharply to the door. Her heart quickened, her mouth went dry.

Oh God, Oh God, Oh God-

Knock Knock

For a few seconds Eurydice's feet were frozen to the spot, then as the knocks became louder she walked towards the door, biting her lips. She opened the door to face a brunette woman, her face quickly changing to an over exaggerated smile which crinkled her powdered face. She was smaller than Eurydice, with high heels so high she couldn't walk stable in them. Her face was strained and pale, the Council symbol on her nose in the shape of an S.

"Eurydice?" The women asked overly cheerful. Eurydice nodded bluntly.

What are you going to do Eurydice? A voice inside her head taunted. She tried to ignore it.

"...Eurydice?" The woman snapped bringing Eurydice out of her thoughts. She glanced towards the woman to show she was listening. She didn't trust herself to open her mouth "I understand you must be feeling very excited about this Eurydice but you must listen to me, you understand?"

Eurydice nodded again.

"Here you are, your number sweety, remember to smile won't you? Lady won't be happy to see you with that...expression on your face, you mustn’t be afraid, this is to celebrate you sweety, nothing will happen-" the woman paused and her voice tightened "nothing has happened in quite a few years actually Hahaha!" she laughed, her voice shrill. "And you know of course, what happens if, there is some... unfortunate case" Eurydice glanced towards her, she knew what she meant nothing has happened in a few years. Nobody had said no.

What are you going to do Eurydice? The same voice asked quietly.

The woman was still talking, stomping down the stairs of the hotel. Eurydice hardly noticed when they stopped outside the hotel and into the Council car. Her mind wasn't working probably.
