"Wake up, Greenie." Someone said the next morning. I craned my neck carefully because it was aching from the position I was in. It was Newt.

"What do you want?" I sighed.

"You're cheery in the morning. Eat up, its breakfast." he said handing me some bread and water.

"Thanks." I muttered.

Newt stared at me for a moment. "You could've easily broken the bars in the Slammer. You could've tried to run into the Maze. Why didn't you?"

"Because I was so happy to be the fortunate one to spend the night in a freaking jail." I said sarcastically.

"I'm serious." Newt said with a blank expression on his face.

"I was thinking about it but the Doors closed and if someone saw me I'd have to come back into this stupid thing." I explained.

"Are you going to do it again?"

"Do what?"

"Run."

I paused for a moment. Did I really want to meet these Grievers Newt told me about? I'd rather live, no matter how crappy the situation. "No."

"You hesitated."

"Oh no, what a crime."

"You know, you're going to become good friends with Minho. You're both sarcastic and annoying." Newt scoffed.

"I don't want any friends, I just want to get out of this place." I said, looking around the Glade.

"That's how I felt, three years ago when Alby, Gally, Minho and all them came. But we needed each other and suddenly became good friends."

"You were here for three years? I've been here for less than a day and I already feel like I'm going to blow my brains out."

"I was in the exact same position as you. Except, I had nobody to tackle me as I ran towards the Maze." Newt gave me a quick glare before returning to his blank expression. His eyes showed sadness for a split second but then I couldn't figure it out. Something had to have happened to him in that Maze.

"By the way, you gave me a huge bruise from that tackle." I whined, letting my curiosity off the hook.

"You poor baby." Newt rolled his eyes.

"Whatever. So when—" I was cut off by the sounds of two boys talking from what I could see. (again--mom, dad, seriously? you had to be short?)

"That boy in the black tank is Minho. He is going to give you the tour, so your dumb butt doesn't run out of here again. He's the fastest runner here in the Glade." Newt explained.

Minho and a few other boys ran into the Maze.

"Oh, so you go all kung-fu chop chop on me, but a couple of boys run in and it's all sunshine and rainbows." I sarcastically nodded my head. "Got it."

"They're Runners." Newt told me, probably annoyed with my sarcastic remarks.

"If he's a Runner, how is he going to give me a tour?"

"He's coming back at some point, greenbean."

"What the hell is a greenbean?"

"A Greenie."

"And what is a Greenie?"

"A newbie."

"Are you lovebirds done talking?" Alby asked, coming out of nowhere. Newt and I exchanged embarrassed glances as Alby fumbled for some keys.

"I'm free?" I asked Alby.

"For now." he said flatly. I get up and brush off my clothes before getting out of the Slammer.

I could feel Newt watching me as I walked away from the Slammer. I felt uneasy knowing he was watching me with every step I took.

I looked around the Glade, giving me a chance to the glance at Newt who was indeed looking at me. I found an area filled with trees, like a forest. I walked over there still knowing Newt was watching. I sighed and leaned against a tree, looking up at the sky. I looked at the Glade for a moment and realized Newt was no longer watching me.

"Hey, Greenie." I looked to see who was talking and it was Teresa.

"Hey," I mumbled out.

Teresa sat next to me. "How was spending the night in the Slammer?"

I rolled my eyes. "It was a joy," I said sarcastically.

"Thomas tried the exact same thing when he first came here." Teresa looked at me as if we were related somehow. "He ran. Ironically, you both ended up face-planting. Him, clumsy. You, tackled."

I chuckled a little at her insult towards him and then looked around. "Where's Thomas?"

"He's a Runner." Teresa told me. "He ran into the Maze right before the Doors close and Newt didn't grab him in time. He spent a night out there. Nobody had before." She paused. "But he came out alive and Minho nominated him to be a Runner, even thinking about making him the Keeper. He's not a Keeper, but he got to be a Runner."

"Why did he go into the Maze at night?" I asked with a confused expression.

She stared absently out into the Glade. "Minho was running with Alby, he's a Runner too. Alby got stung by a Griever and passed out but Minho couldn't leave him. Just as the Doors were closing, Minho came dragging Alby. But it was too late. So Thomas being stupid, went in there. They survived."

"Wow," I breathed.

"I think the Runners are back, come on." Teresa led me to Minho. Thomas was next to him. "Minho!" She called out, but Thomas stopped her.

"Not now, Teresa." Thomas panted. "We'll be back." Him and Minho took off, and Teresa just shrugged.

Newt came up to us. "So, Newt, how am I supposed to have a Tour if my tour guide won't even talk to me?"

Newt rolled his eyes. "Fine, I'll give you the bloody Tour." As we were walking around and Newt was talking to me, I noticed he had a limp. I watched his face and he had no expression, so I figured it was an old injury.

Our footsteps shuffling in the grass were the only noises between us. "Why do you limp?" I finally asked.

"Injury." he mumbled.

"Woah, really? I never guessed that." I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. "How?"

Newt stopped and stepped in front of me. "Listen, Samantha. It happened a long time ago and it doesn't matter now. So stop asking about it." His eyes stared coldly into mine. I was taken aback a bit.

"You know what, Newt?" I gave him a fake smile. "I know where to go. Thanks for everything." And with that, I walked away. I knew he was staring at me, but I didn't look back.
