When you realise that you've changed so much since the day you were first brought into this world, you can only wonder if it's a good thing or a bad thing in the end. To me, that thought never even crossed my mind, and for good reasons too. What was the point of even thinking about such bullshit? It didn't matter to anyone whether they allowed nurture to alter nature, especially when it came to me. No one could expect the Reaper's daughter to be anything but what her father was. A monster.

I returned home that same day to find Samantha actually in the house for once. She was monitoring some new security devices she had installed in the house, and that was the first thing I noticed when I first entered the house, a camera installed outside of the door. In spite of feeling a little more secured than I regularly did, I somehow doubted that the devices would keep the jackass out for long. He seemed able to do what most people would consider impossible, though receiving any intelligence seemed to be completely out of the picture.

"Samantha?" I closed the door behind me and pulled of my shoes just as she entered my sight. She pulled a slightly surprised, yet fatigued face at me. It wouldn't shock me, she hadn't received a full night's sleep in I don't know how long. She then proceeded to turn back to the living room again to continue with whatever she left off there. "Come here, Helmine." She ordered, and too passive to argue with her command, I threw my school bag on the floor and followed after her.

Just as I was about to ask her about the security system she had installed, she pointed up to the ceiling and I placed my eyes to see yet another security camera on the wall next to the light. I gave her a look,"You think fancy footage is going to keep the killer from entering our house? Our previous security had already had all of the qualifications." I remarked with a sarcastic tone.

"I have monitored cameras in the entire house with the exceptions of our bedrooms and the bathroom. I have also installed two on each side of the house outside, meaning nothing will go by undetected." She explained matter-of-factly, and then let out a loud yawn and rubbed her eyes undoubtedly out of tiredness. "Anyway, how was school?" She suddenly decided to ask and turned to look at me, but as soon as she did, I could see worry and concern wash over her. "Helmine, you're so pale. Are you feeling alright? Are you having a fever again?"

Before she could place a hand on my forehead to check my temperature, I grabbed her by the wrist and prevented her from further doing so. My actions seemed to take her aback, and instantly regretting my doings, I gently let go of her hand and groaned as I began to scratch the back of my head. "Sorry, but I'm fine. Just a little tired." I told her, hoping she would believe me, and fortunately, she did and didn't question me any further. "But you should worry about yourself, you need to go get some shut-eyes. You're looking more terrible than me." I abruptly added, pointing at her like a mother scolding her child.

Her eyes fell to the floor with a sigh. "I can't. I need to get to work in a few minutes,"

I was not satisfied with that answer, not at all. "Sam, seriously, stay home today. You've been overworking yourself these past months."

"I know, but commissioner Bold-"

"Can kiss my ass." I interrupted sharply and exhale a fresh amount of air before proceeding to place a hand on her shoulder. "Sam, seriously, I'll personally kill your boss if he doesn't it you some crap."

A weak smile spread across her lips. "Is this your way of saying that you worry about me?"

I scoffed with a dark chuckle. "No, but if you die from overworking yourself, then who the hell is going to pay the rent?"

She laughed at my joke, something I rarely saw her did. Then suddenly, I felt a pair of arms wrap themselves around me, and it took me a couple of seconds to comprehend what was happening. Samantha was hugging me, not like a short-lived one, but like a genuine embrace. I wasn't familiar with the experience of being touched like that, to feel like I really mattered to someone, especially not like that, not even by Victor. I had never been hugged before, not since.... I felt the warmth from her coat exchange itself with mine, and and as she pulled away from me, it took me another couple of seconds before I came back to touch with reality again.
