The next few days were the same: get up, eat, get dressed, do something fun. The fun part varied from frolicking in the  park to helping mom paint. Today we decided to go to the park. Mom hugged us before we went off and reminded us to be safe around the roads because of all the construction going on.

"Mom. We will be fine." I said it slowly and looked her in the eye to reassure her. This was the first time I noticed the few strands of silver in her hair.

"Come on, wasting daylight." Melody pulled me out the door. I dug my heels down and got her to stop.

"Say bye to mom at least."

Melody ran inside said a quick I love you and good bye and ran back outside, this time holding a bag, "Forgot this inside, now lets go!"

"Why are you in such a rush?" I questioned.

"I have a good feeling about today, I wanna pull off an awesome prank."

"Do i have to remind you that your pranks are what got us kicked out of the first school we  went to and almost got us kicked out of this one?"

"It wasn't my pranks, it was the kids trying to pick fights with us." Melody she protested.

"Yeah well they wouldn't have tried to fight us if you didn't pull pranks on them all the time.."

"Anyways, it doesn't matter. Its summer break, teachers have no say over what we do for a few months!" she was way to excited about this, I couldn't help but laugh.

We walked the rest of the way to the park, but something caught our eye. The trees by the road had bloomed and we both ran over to the first one we saw. Within the past two days most of the flowers had come into full bloom. Melody jumped to get the flowers from the branch but landed with nothing but dismembered petals and leaves. I walked to the trunk of the tree and studied how high it was from the ground.

"Hey come here." I was still partially in thought so when i heard Melody right next to me i jumped a bit.

"Whats up, you gotta plan?" she guessed.

"Yeah, bend down and put your hands together like-" I was about to show her what i needed her to do but she was already on one knee and had her fingers laced  as a brace, "Yeah, like that. Now hold steady." I stepped in her hand and she boosted me up just enough for me to grab the lowest branch and pull myself up. melody stayed put for a few moments to spot me if I fell. I inched farther onto the branch and it started lowering its self. Melody flashed me a smile and started picking flowers from the now easy reach branch.

After she had a good sized bundle I hooked both legs on one side of the branch, grabbed on with both arms and pulled my knees away from the branch to let gravity do its thing. I held on to the branch until my feel were parallel to the ground then let go.

"10 for the dismount but an 8 for the landing." she laughed as I stumbled a bit.

"Like you could do better" I teased.

"Your right, I can't support myself long enough to do a slow mo back flip from a tree." she stuck one of the flowers in my pony tail and we were about to continue walking to the park but what happened next only took up about five seconds.

There was a loud crash, two trucks, a log carrier and cement tumbler collided on the rode in the direction we came from, the momentum caused the logs to break free and send them all over the road. A log tumbling at top speed was heading right towards us. Move! You have to move! I wanted to bolt, to grab Melody's arm and run, or duck behind the tree, but my legs wouldn't move. I heard Melody yell my name as I saw her push me behind the tree. The lest thing i remembered seeing was the log hitting next to Melody and the pink and white flowers floating down around us. Then everything went black as my head hit the ground.

A light was shined in my face as I opened my eyes. I saw two doctors standing by me, one was talking and the other was righting down notes. A ringing in my ears made it impossible to hear anything for a few moments.

Once the ringing started to fade I could hear what the man was saying.

"Can you hear me? Miss if you can hear me, I need an answer." I could see the littlest bit of brown hair coming out from under his little hat thing and his eyes were a light brown. Why that mattered to me I have no clue, maybe i was just trying to find anything to focus on until i found my voice.

I blinked hard and managed a response. "I can hear, not deaf." the doctor with the note pad started jotting things down. "What happened?" I looked around the room i was in. Cream colored walls and pictures of little kid drawings and animals were hung about, there was a window and by the looks of it we were on the first floor, it had gotten late, the sun was getting low. I was the only patient in the room.

"There was an accident with construction vehicles and in all the commotion you got a concussion. We-"

I almost jumped out of the bed when I realized I didn't Know where Melody was, "Where is the other girl that was there?" I accidentally said a little louder than planned. "Where is my sister, Melody?"

The doctors posture tightened and his expression changed just slightly, "About that.. Miss, please excuse what in about to say, but she didn't make it.."

My stomach dropped and my heart felt like it slowed down, my ears started ringing again and I couldn't feel my hands or feet. If I wasn't on this bed thing I would have collapsed. When I looked at the doctor, his lips were moving but no sound came from them. My eyes burned and my mouth tasted like lead. The flood gates opened causing me to sob.

The doctors left the room, I don't know anything they said before they left and frankly I didn't care. I also don't know how much time passed before my eyes stopped watering and I started to think. What about mom? What is she going to think? She is going to want to know what I remember, how can I bring myself to tell her? Melody, her oldest daughter, died saving me when I was to scared to even move. Its my fault Melody isn't here. No- stop thinking like that, it doesn't matter if its true or not, thinking like that isn't going to help. The clock above the door read 11:58. I wasn't hooked up to any machines I just had to stay the night in case something happened within the first 12 hours of my head being injured. I have about 4 minuets, give or take, until the doctor comes by my door to do the "Midnight checkups".

My door opened and it was the doctor, ahead of schedule, but I just figured he started early on his rounds. Something didn't feel right though, I couldn't quite describe why. There was just this tugging feeling in my gut.

"Raven Hughes. Sister of Melody Hughes," it sounded like multiple hollow voices coming from him, "I've waited quite some time to get to do this." he faced me and I saw that his eyes were yellow. i jumped out of the bed on the side opposite of the doctor- or what was the doctor. "I was ordered to terminate you and your sister but it looks like I only have to deal with you now." he quickly moved towards me. I waited until he was on the same side of the room as me then jumped on and over the bed making my way to the door. After shutting it I grabbed a chair that was by the room for visitors and propped it against the handle. Thankfully I wasn't in on of those hospital gowns and I was in my clothes from earlier. (Yeah.. not the best hospital). I ran down a hallway and was just able to turn a corner before I heard the chair fall over, did I mention I have no idea how to properly block a door? Just down the hall was the front desk, records and belongings of ER patients. I stopped at the files and flew through them looking for the  file that belonged to us. "F, G, H! Huffman, Hugenson, Hughes!" I grabbed the folder, looked for my shoes in the belongings area and ran out the door. Once outside I looked around to get my bearings straight. I just had to run down main street and turn on third then id be home.
