A soulmate was supposed to be once in a lifetime. Only something or someone horrible could tear two soulmates apart... And Francis still couldn't believe that he had been the cause of such a thing. He couldn't believe it, not because it was unbelievable but because he had been so stupid and careless. Francis didn't have much anymore.
He had no job, no money, no home... No future, in his opinion. He only ate when the soup kitchen was open; only slept when the dingy mattress under the bridge wasn't already taken.
He had fallen as low as gravity would allow, and he couldn't see a way to get back up.
He longed for Arthur. Just a touch, his name on Arthur's lips, a glance. Anything.
Francis couldn't recall what love felt like, and to compensate for it's loss he was filled with loathing and spite. He knew happiness, although the definition had become warped. A lifetime ago, happiness had been Arthur. Now, happiness was finding a half eaten burger in the trash. A mild night, or even better, a night when he would have the mattress to himself. Happiness was not dying on the streets, alone and unwanted and forgotten.
He sighed. It was raining tonight, which reflected his mood splendidly. He was walking down an alley that was lit only by a flickering streetlight.
He was midway through the alley when a shadow jumped at him, knocking him to the ground.
Rough hands searched him for anything of value, pressing his face into the ground. He felt a sharp pain as the attacker growled in frustration. He felt the weight leave him and heard the echo of retreating footsteps, then stood and wobbled out of the alley. There was a pain in his side and when he looked down, a bloom of dark red was beginning to stain his shirt. He hummed and lifted it, his arms feeling weak. A harsh line ripped it's way from his stomach to the bottom of his chest, blood gushing from the wound.
"Oh." Francis said simply, his head becoming fuzzy. "I've been stabbed."
His vision went dark.
