After dinner, I lay down on my cot, tossing and turning from the nightmares. I found myself pounding to the ground. I had felt like the inescapable anxiety was eating me alive. I wiped my eyes, know it was still early and that no one was awake.
I shook my head, accepting I wouldn't be able to sleep that night. I sat up, dressing myself and pulling on army boots. I felt uncomfortable in the very dressy British suit, and hissed in irritancy. "This is the worst uniform ever. Sucks to be a Brit."
I hadn't planned on telling my parents, but I had jumped a younger British soldier and taken everything he had. A seizure gun, a small pistol, and the suit. It fit me perfectly. And who knows how useful those guns will be.
I walked over to my cats, patting their heads. They looked up at me with weary eyes. It was the grand heist. I would need my pets, including Yoyo.
I grabbed my military bag, another lucky snag, and allowed Waffle to crawl into it. I got Jackson in the front pocket, and he ducked his head down. I went outside quietly, making sure I had my switchblade in my pocket. The pistol was in my bag pocket, close to my waist. I wouldn't use the seizure gun... yet. When I got outside, I walked over to the small doghouse.
"Yoyo... Yoyo..." I whispered. I heard a low growl and saw his dark brown eyes peer out at me. I smirked, a bit of cockiness in my tone.
"You ready to go stealing?"
I threw a British soldier doll my mom crocheted in front of him. He growled, grabbing it and tearing it to shreds within seconds. Yoyo was practically the devil in a dog's body. However, he knew who I was, only trusting me, and me alone. He was okay with my parents but if I ever ran into a stranger, they would have hell to pay...
Yoyo came to my side and I latched his chain onto my belt, pushing my hair back and wiping the sweat from my head. Funny... I thought it had been colder, with it snowing and all, but surprisingly, I was hot in this suit. I shook my head. I'd have to live with it.
Yoyo led me into the town. I saw the middle of it was lit up in celebration. Of what, I hadn't a clue.
I made my way into the gates. It wasn't long before I ran into a British soldier."Afternoon!" I smiled and waved back and continued walking. I probably greeted twenty guards before I even got there.
The head guard watched and kept unwanted visitors from coming inside. He stood there, a grim face as if he was angry. Maybe cause he's out in the cold? I don't know.
"Who are you?" I was completely prepared for questions that were thrown at me.
"My name is Chris Anderson. I'm a front liner in the army."
The guard stared for a minute. I knew he wanted to give me trouble.
"What's in the bag?" I looked at it and shrugged.
"Some bread, a few books to read at this party, I mean who knows how long this will take. And a pistol just in case." He gave me a brutal look. "Mind if you prove it?" I rolled my eyes, playing along.
"Man, you're thorough. You are good for this job. No one can get past you." There was sarcasm in my tone, and I was pretty sure he noticed. I began poking through my bag and letting him examine it. Suddenly another question slid through my ear.
"Why do you sound like a girl?" Ok, I admit that kinda surprised me, but I told you I was prepared, right?
"It's just my voice." He nodded, obviously preparing to ask me more questions.
"Where are you from?"
"Where else? Britain."
"Who is your relatives?"
"John and Mary James."
"Why do you have a dog?"
I paused. "Well, he's my pet. But he's also my guard dog, and protects me from everything." I put emphasis on everything as Yoyo sniffed him and growled.
I pulled him back, and he had a dark look in his eyes. "Down boy." I looked at him, giving him a look that said 'not yet'.
This time he stood there for a moment and came up with a good one. This one did surprise me.
"If you're a front liner, how are you not dead yet?" I felt an aura come off of him as he smirked, as if he had me befuddled. I thought quickly.
"I guess I got lucky, didn't I?" His grin fell and then I smirked at him. He stood to the side, waving one arm inside.
"Proceed."
I nodded. "Thank you, my friend." I felt him snuff at me and I only rolled my eyes at him. And with that, I proceeded inside.
