Jeremiah holds open the passenger door for me so I step out, he hands me my crutches and leans against his vehicle glancing at me suspiciously. "You know you might get a little cold with just a tank top on today," he blurts out. I look down at my shirt but realize that I'm wearing a leather jacket over the tank top. "Can you not see the leather jacket?" I question and point to the jacket. He smirks, "Yeah I see it, but that hat of yours doesn't match with it all that well." He tells me. "Oh yeah? What does Mr. Fashonista have in mind then?" I speculate.
Jeremiah chuckles and uses his car key to pop the trunk. He digs around in a duffel bag until he finds what he's looking for. He shuts the trunk and looks at me with a glimmer in his eye. "This," Jeremiah blurts whilst pulling his baseball jersey from behind his back. "Wow, that's sweet of you J!" I comment with a smile.
He cheekily smiles, "You think you could wear it today and maybe to my game tonight also?" I giggle and think about it for a minute. I notice that the longer I take to answer the more nervous Jeremiah gets. "I suppose I can," I agree and he jumps in the air with excitement.
I slip off my leather jacket and throw on Jeremiah's jersey. "How's it look?" I ask whilst posing in the jersey. It is a little big on me but I think it fits well. I glance up and find Jeremiah's sapphire blue eyes intently staring at me. He suddenly steps alarmingly closer to me. So close that I get a whiff of his minty breath. "I think you look gorgeous in my jersey, Sunshine." He whispers to me. I find myself speechless with my stomach knotting together. Without warning, Jeremiah grabs my leather jacket and carefully places it in his sports car.
"What was that for?" I question. "Well, I don't want you to lose your jacket." He answers with a smile. I nod my head in appreciation and begin my trek towards the entrance. He locks his sports car and catches up with me. I feel myself tiring out quickly and stop to catch a breath. "How about I take that heavy bookbag off your hands?" He asks. I smile and accept his offer. He takes the book bag off my shoulders and throws it on one of his.
We continue our walk in a peaceful silence until we reach the main entrance. "Are you ready?" He asks me. It has been two weeks since I've been to school but Kassie told me that nothing much has changed. I take a deep breath and nod my head. He smiles and opens the door for me. I hobble in with Jeremiah tagging along beside me.
"Here we are." Jeremiah acknowledges when we arrive at my locker. I hug him simply because I wanted to. "Thanks for the ride," I tell him. He hands me my book bag and shyly smiles. "No problem, well I better get going then." He mentions and waves goodbye. Once he's gone, I turn around and start putting stuff from my backpack into my locker to lighten the load.
I close my locker and head for the elevator. I was almost to the elevator when someone crashes into me and my crutches go flying. "Hey watch where you're going loser!" someone shouts to me. I open my eyes to find another girl on the floor with our stuff flung everywhere. "What are you waiting for, pick my stuff up!" The girl shouts giving me a nasty look.
"Um, excuse me, I don't even know who you are! This was an accident so what gives you the right to call me a loser and then expect me to pick up your stuff bitch!" I hear a few gasps from the crowd that had formed and she scoffs at me. By the looks of it, no one has ever spoken up to her before. She stands up, "Guess what, I don't give a flying fuck what you say and you should be watching where you're going!" Miles is the only person who used to talk to me like this.
Suddenly the girl's eyes grow wide and I notice her eyes are drawn to something behind me. I turn around to find a very pissed off Asher. He storms up to the girl with clenched fists. I get the feeling he is going to do something he'll regret so I try to make my way towards him but someone grabs my hand and holds me back. I glance up to find, Brantley holding me back with Jeremiah, Miles, Sebastian, Kassie, Easton, Noah, and Tucker right behind him. But I didn't care, I didn't want the girl to get hurt even after what she said to me.
"Listen here new girl, you can not just go waltzing around my school running into Emerson thinking that you're all bad and telling her off because what you don't know is when that girl gets mad she throws punches and that's what happened to the last person she punched." He shouts and points to Miles in his wheelchair" Her eyes widen slightly when she glances over at Miles. "She now has a group of friends that stick up for her so next time you go parading around my school make sure you know what's what. Now get your shit together and fuck off!" He shouts in a tone I've never heard before. He seems to calm down a bit when she nods her head vigorously. "Clear the area. Now!" Asher shouts at the crowd and they quickly scatter.
Brantley finally lets me go and Asher walks over to me. He helps me up and he hugs me. "Is your leg okay? I'm sorry sweetheart." Asher questions and apologizes at the same time. I smile and nod my head. Jeremiah hands me one of my crutches and Sebastian gives me the other. He kisses me on the forehead and tells me that he needs to get to class because if he's late for the first period one more time this month, he's getting suspended. Eventually, the rest of my friends head to there classes, leaving me and the girl to pick up our stuff.
I hobble over to the girl and carefully settle myself onto the floor. I start to pick up my stuff catch her wiping away a few tears out of the corner of her eye. I clear my throat, "I'm sorry he didn't mean to scare you, he's just really protective of me." She looks at me and nods, "I can tell, It's my first day here and at my old school, I was known as the "bad girl" so I didn't realize adjusting was going to be this difficult." I smile, "well you've just officially met the "bad girl" of this school." She glances at me with a smirk and we both start cracking up laughing.
"Girls! What are you doing, get to class!" I hear someone shout. I glance up to find the hall monitor towering over us. The new girl speaks up, "Sorry sir I'm new here and she was helping me pick up the books I dropped, we just got a little carried away." she told him with a chuckle. He stares at us for a moment until he eventually sighs in defeat, "well alright then, you two get to class and Ms. Green will be your guide."
I nod my head in agreement and we finish picking up our stuff. She helps me up and we start making our way to class together. "I'm Liberty by the way," She tells me with a small smile. I glance at her and smile, "Okay Liberty, well what's your first class anyway?" She pulls out her schedule, "Looks as if it's Biochemistry with Mrs. Evergreen." I gasp, "that's my first class too." We both smile and continue down the hall.
