I am a virgin. I'm 23 and still a virgin. So what? Why is sex such a big deal? So I've never done the dirty with a guy, sue me. You see, I have accepted that I may die alone. Guys just suck. Period. But my best friend is still hellbent on trying to dick me down. Truthfully I can't lie there have been those sad nights alone watching the Notebook. Yes I'm that cliché. And yes I will admit that I do want to be able to come home and cuddle with someone or go out to a fancy dinner but in my case that just doesn't happen. All the guys I've dated were meatheads, simply wanting to smash and dash. And that's how it always is. Though my best friend, with her boyfriend of 7 years, tells me otherwise. Yes it sounds stupid but I'm not particularly interested in searching for the guy that will sweep me off my feet because that just doesn't happen, I've tried. Besides I'm way too busy with my job.
I'm happy. I've got my dream job and my whole life ahead of me. I'm the head editor of my company. I work with the directors and I get to edit the movies they make. It's all that I've ever wanted in life. To be a part of the cinematic experience. And I get to work at my dream job with my best friend. What more could I ask for?
"Jess!".
"Yeah?" I yelled back from my office. "Oh ok good, you're here" the director said, coming into my office and shutting the door behind. "Okay so here's the schedule for the new project and I need to go over the plan with you" she said. Big things were happening at my company. We had just landed a full year movie project that would bring great publicity for us. Plus I could get to work with some big time actors.
"Okay so we are getting a bigger film crew and you will be getting an assistant editor to help you". I nod as I listen to her. "You have more work to do for this movie so I'm counting on you and your assistant. He's coming in later today so you guys can meet and plan out your work tasks. This is important because you guys will be spending a lot of time together so please show him the ropes and let him know his responsibilities". "Yes I'm on it don't worry".
"I know. Okay great, so just continue what your doing and I'll see you in the meeting on Monday" she said exiting my office leaving a pile of papers on my desk containing the screenplay, script and schedule for this project. I was really excited. This is the biggest project I've been on yet in my 1 year of working at this company.
I spent most of my afternoon flipping through the stack of papers on my desk and going through it all to get an idea for what the movie was about. It was almost half past five and my assistant editor had not shown up yet. At this point I was just waiting and I had no intention of sitting around for him to show up. How irresponsible. If there's one thing I hate most, is tardiness, it aggravates me. I have never been late a day in my life and I don't plan on it. It makes you look unprofessional. I decide to pack up for the day and go home. As I grab my bag and my keys for the office and open my door, I bump into a tall rugged man. "Oh shit, my bad" he says.
He had dark brown messy hair, he wore almost all black except for his grey shirt which was hidden behind his dark flannel. He wore black black converse and had black ripped jeans on as well. "Can I help you?" I ask looking him up and down. It's not to say he looked bad or anything, he actually had really nice facial features and beautiful hazel eyes, but he wasn't exactly classy. "Uh yea I'm the assistant editor, sorry I'm late, uh my car ran out of gas". "Yea you're pretty late actually, I waited for you. I was just gonna leave" I say.
"I'm sorry but I'm here now. Can we just go over whatever we have to?".
"Okay I guess. Come in" I say leading him into my office and taking out the schedule for him. "I'm Jess, it's nice to meet you" I say reaching my hand out for a handshake. "But the name card on your shirt says Jessica" he says completely ignoring the handshake. How immature. "Right, because that's my legal name but I don't like it so please just call me Jess, everyone calls me Jess".
"Right".
"So what's your name?". "Brandon" he scans my office, picking a leaf from the plant I had sitting on my desk and playing with it.
"Okay well, it's a pleasure meeting you-" I say.
"Do you always talk like that?".
"Like what?" I ask confused. "Like all formal like that?".
"I'm afraid I don't know what you mean, but can we just go on with the discussion? I should have left 45 minutes ago".
"Yea sure". "Okay so this is the copy of the schedule and we need to start working on the clips on Monday so you will need to be here. I'll give you the raw files and you can convert them" I say. "You know how to trim clips properly, right?". "Yea sure" he replies. "Okay then you can do that too".
"Great, then it's settled" I say picking up my things. "Here's my number, if you have any questions and we will start the work on Monday, so I'll see you then. Have a good weekend, I'm afraid I have to run. I'm meeting a friend, 45 minutes ago" I say holding the door open cueing him to leave.
"Right" he says getting up from one of the chairs I have in my office. "Guess I'll see you Monday then, Jessica" he says with a smirk. "Yes, but like I said, please call me Jess" I say still holding the door.
"Right" he smirked again as he walked out of my office and I quickly grabbed my keys. I locked up and rushed to my car. I was meeting my best friend who didn't come into work today, at this cafe we always go to.
I finally arrived at the place and saw Max. I rushed over to her and immediately apologized for being late. "Seriously, I waited around for 45 minutes to meet my new assistant editor for the project".
"Well she doesn't seem like she cares about her new job at all".
"Actually it's a guy".
"What? No way. Is he hot?" Max asked poking me with her elbow. "No we are not getting into this" I say firmly. "Why not? You gotta stop living in the past, it's time to getting over you-know-who".
"Stop. Look it's not even about that. He's just, working for me- and we have to maintain an appropriate co-worker relationship" I say. "Okay, whatever. But seriously Jess, I really want you to be happy and I want you to move on" she says.
"I am happy, and I certainly don't need a guy to be happy. I appreciate your concern, but trust me, I'm over you-know-who" I chuckle. "Alright, if you say so" she smiled.
"This is getting way too sappy, I'm gonna go get a coffee" I laugh and leave my things next to Max to get a drink.
Max and I spend the afternoon laughing and catching up on gossip. Hanging out with my best friend is always the highlight of any day. I love her to pieces and even though I do feel happy, I still feel like there is something missing, I just don't know what.
