Hey Guys! I'm sorry, I know I promised more updates on a more regular basis, but as usual I'm a procrastinating lil' sh*t; BUT I'm at a family reunion and the weather is beautiful, so have a one-shot inspired by my uncle's new patio! FYI, I have the rest of Sniper's Story planned out, as well as some more of Spy's! I expect Sniper's will be done first, if for no other reason than more people read that one. ANYWHO- have an Engineer fic!
Love ya'll! ~Vex

A soft breeze blew through the kitchen window, relieving you slightly from the heat of the stove. Looking out at the fields of grain, you felt almost at ease, save for the little piece of your heart stationed miles away. You sighed as the timer beeped, bending over to take out the meatloaf. Setting it on the counter to cool, you move to set the table. Without realizing it, you set the table for two, your heart saddening at the sight of the empty, plate and the delicious meal ready-to-eat: meatloaf was his favorite after all.
After eating, you put the meatloaf in a container and put it in the fridge- easy pickings for later on in the week. You washed your plate and silverware, staring intently at your hands as you did- anything to distract yourself from the deafening silence of the house. Turning back to the table, you couldn't bring yourself to put away the extra plate; so you left it on the table, instead grabbing a book and heading to the back porch.
The sun had set while you were eating, and the moon had risen- a beautiful sliver of silver in the black sky. The stars above shone right along with it- specks of cosmic dust sprinkling the night. Lonely cicadas chirped from their places on the trees surrounding to house, and the low buzz of the bug zapper sounded just above the porch swing.
You sat down on the swing, opening your book to the marked page. For a while, the rays of the moon provided you with good reading light, but a sudden burst of light made you look up from the story.
All was normal for a short while, but right as you were about to turn back to the book, a streak of light shot across the sky.
Comet after comet flew across the night sky, a beautiful show of nature- seemingly just for you. Staring at the stars, you remembered watching them with a strong arm around your shoulder.
Amongst the cicadas, you heard a rumble. It started low, but as it got louder- closer- you shot up out of your seat. You'd know that rumbling engine anywhere.
You ran through the house- past the open window, the lonely plate, and the leftover meatloaf- out the front door.
Dust followed behind the truck, the rusted old thing barely held together, but running perfectly. It stopped a ways away from the house, in the grass by the road.
You started running before the engine even stopped, your (f/c) sundress flowing behind you as you did.
The door opened and a pair of old work boots started their walk towards you.
Tears began to fall as you made your way closer. Time stopped as you ran into his arms, the only noise left being the beat of his heart as he held you close. You buried your face in his shoulder as he picked you up and twirled you around.
As he set you on the ground, you pulled away, looking into his warm brown eyes. He wiped away your tears with his thumb, staring into your eyes as he spoke.
"Hey there darlin'."
