The Ultrasound

Nia's Point of View

We arrived to the appointment with a little time to

spare. I scanned the parking lot, wondering to

myself if Caleb would show. Did I overreact? Nah,

fuck that. Neither of us made an effort, so if he

chose not to show, that was his business.

"Penny for your thoughts, bae?" Jo asked, holding

my hand over the console as we sat.

"Oh, nothin. Just a little nervous, a little excited."

In which that was the truth. I really don't know

what I'm going to do after everything is all said and

done. Once my contract is fulfilled. My heart sank

at the thought of it. My phone vibrated in my purse.

It was Caleb letting me know he had arrived. In

pulled his shiny Aston and out stepped he. Greeting

Jo and I with hugs and kisses, careful not to hold

me too long.

"Shall we, ladies?" Caleb held the door and ushered

us in. I checked in for my appointment and waited

with my lover and my.. Other lover, with whom I

conceived. About five minutes went by before I was

called to the back.

"Miss Lynia Williams?" I short pudgy blonde called

softly and we all stood.

"That's me!" I waddled over.

"Nice to meet you Miss Williams, Doctor Yahara will see you now."

I think we all took a deep breath before walking

back to the exam room.

"If you would Miss Williams, here's a gown for you. The doctor should be right in."

I turned to look at my two guests.

"Ahem, turn please." I made a spinning motion.

Josie turned, and so did he, but not before that

lopsided smirk shown on his lips. Jerk.

I slipped out of the maxi dress and sandals I'd worn

and stepped into the gown.

"All clear y'all." I hopped up on the table.

*knock knock*

"Nia, so good to see you and baby. How've you been feeling?" Doctor Jacqueline Yahara stepped

into the room. Ever since I got pregnant and moved

to Alpharetta, she's been my girl. Smart, beautiful

and a damn good OB/GYN! She shook the hands

of Caleb and Josie before scrubbing up and

checking my vitals. All good.

Up, went my legs into the stirrups. After a vaginal

exam came the ultrasound. Omg! That damn gel is

cold! Doctor Yahara probed my bell looking for a

clear picture of my little one.. A few seconds more

were followed by one heartbeat.. And then

another's?! My eyes popped as did everyone else's.

This never showed up on any of my previous

ultrasounds. Caleb fainted. Josie cried tears of joy

and I.. Had to give away twins?
