Lying there, my eyes never lost the star shooting across the sky. It was if I was longing to be there, to be flying into nothing, into the unknown because it was better than here.
The grass was cool against my skin and the longer pieces tickled my nose. I could feel the damp clumps of dirt underneath me and I could feel the wet cotton of my t-shirt against my back. Yet I didn't move, didn't flinch because it was like I was paralyzed. The stars held me down, as if they had invisible chains holding back my wrists from flying up, my legs from pushing away and my head from looking back. I couldn't quite explain how, but it felt like I belonged up there, in the sky, instead of here, on the ground. On this earthy, dirty, lumpy, bumpy ground that I had to call home. Then I closed my eyes, my breaths shallow and slow.
I remembered when I was little, I had escaped from my house, my mum leaving the door open accidentally. I managed to get up, run out and keep on running on my small chubby legs. My black braids floating behind me in the gentle breeze. I lived by a forest, but I also lived by the beach, and on the third side was a lake. I had been so intent on running that I didn't see the glowing mass heading towards my direction, the sharp whistling sound it made as it descended from the sky above. Then it smashed into the ground right in front of me. My little body flew backwards and I landed in a heap in the lake.
I remember everything so vividly that it almost seemed unreal.
My body, as this small child, was to run but my brain told me to explore, to wander, to have an adventure. So that's what I did. I walked right out of that lake, and up to the glowing ball of rock. I don't know what I was thinking at the time,
that was the one thing that was hazy,
but I stretched my small fingers towards it and my palm was placed onto it. It was warm and it was scratchy against my skin. But something shifted in the wind and I felt... home. I could see it was trying to give me a message but before I could see or remember, I was grabbed from behind and dragged, as I kicked and screamed, calling to the rock, the non-human and not alive object, but it felt so alive. Then that was all I remembered at this time.
My eyes open again, and I watched the night and cold start to crawl in. I saw to my left the clouds were rolling in and I managed to push myself back up. My body felt at peace as did my mind but I couldn't move my limbs properly, so I limped and staggered out of the clearing, through the tall and dark pine trees and across the damp grass.
I found myself back on the porch and before I could walk inside. I turned my head around briefly and looked back to the galaxy beyond and whispered, "I'll be home soon, I'll be home." With that, I shut the back door behind me, the only sound was the creak of the hinges.
