When I step through the front door, I'm shocked it's empty. I thought my mother would have conducted a lavish welcome home party because she has a party for every occasion, and always dressed in a smile and her expensive clothes.

Now silence roams the room and I'm happy.

"This is a change."

"Your father only just talked her out of it," she responds. "Your mother had half the neighbourhood invited to welcome you home."

"I'm glad she dropped the party. I want to sleep and spend the night with you."

"Don't get too excited, Pierce, I still planned something."

"Oh, what does that entail Scarlett?" I grin.

"Movies . . . chocolate." She grins. "That kind of thing."

"And a pillow fort? We can't have a movie night without one."

"Yes," she sheepishly admits. "What kind of host would I be?"

We head to my bedroom which is transformed into a gigantic mess. Sheets hanging from the ceiling and pillows are scattered along the ground, there's even a television and a section of junk food piled into bowls.

"I didn't realise we owned so many sheets and cushions." I gasp.

"You do now." Scarlett chuckles.

Scarlett grabs my hand and leads me through the jungle of cushions. I find my bed in the middle of the room.

I place the cushions into position and climb into bed. Scarlett grabs a bowl of mixed lollies and climbs in with me. I pat the spot beside me, encouraging her to come closer.

"Are you sure? I don't want to hurt your shoulder."

"It'll be fine."

Scarlett slowly moves closer and rests her head on my shoulder. I reach out for a lolly which stings my left shoulder.

"Thank you for this." I smile.

"You're welcome."

"Now are you ready for this movie marathon?" I bite into a yellow snake.

"Yes! Your father has me working to the bone, I need to relax."

"Oh no, don't tell me that." I pout.

"I like it, keeps me busy." She doesn't say it, but I can see it in her mushy pea green eyes, she needs to stay busy to keep her mind off the drama that's occurred in the past.

"Don't tell my father that, he might trade me for you."

"You'll be able to prove your worth when you come back to work in a couple of days." She pokes my shoulder.

"I feel so rusty." I sigh.

"You'll be fine and best of all, we get to work together," she happily cheers.

"I like the idea of you being my sexy secretary." I wink.

"And when the roles change, I'll love it even more." Scarlett smirks.

I grab a handful of lollies and chuck them at Scarlett. She bites into the air, desperately trying to catch a gummy bear. Instead, the fall onto the bed.

"I was thinking about going back to school," I admit. "That's if I can get back in. Law school is demanding and selective."

"They'd be lucky to have you," she corrects.

"I was hoping you'd want to get a place with me. An apartment close to campus and work."

"I think your mother would miss me as well," she teases.

"Are you kidding me? I have to fight for my parents as well?"

"Working for your father has taught me that you must fight for everything and that there's always a cost," she says. "I understand why you fought for me."

"Why is that?" I question.

"Because that's how you were raised."

"No." I slightly shake my head. "I fought for you because you are worth it. The one lesson he doesn't teach you is deciding which battles are worth it."

A thoughtful look crosses Scarlett's face.

"I like the idea of living with you Pierce," she says.

"Just one question," I nervously ask.

"Sure, what's on your mind?" Scarlett shuffles from my side to grab another bowl filled with chocolate pieces.

"Will you ever tell me about your past?"

"No, because it's not going to change. I want to leave it behind me and start fresh with you. I feel like I can't do that if I'm hauling all those feelings and thoughts into our relationship."

"Okay." I nod.

Scarlett will always be a mystery to me no matter what. I find it exciting because there will always be something new to learn about her.

"Now can we watch the movie?"

"Sure." Scarlett rests her head on my chest.

Perhaps my theory was wrong? We're not fragments because we are broken, but so we can connect with different pieces.

There is something special about Scarlett and how she leaves me feeling like a whole, even if I'm still just a little bit broken.
