As I sat on my filthy bed that undoubtedly had multiple bed bugs, I couldn't help but dream of a different world. I thought about a world that I had once dreamed about when I was a kid. When I was little I always imagined my future and that future always consisted of sun, happiness, and laughter. I imagined myself on a huge farm sitting on my front porch steps soaking up the warm sun as I watched my husband play with my beautiful kids. As I imagined this I could almost hear their laughter, I could almost feel the warm sun lightly burning my skin, and I could almost smell the fresh air that I associated with summer.
This imagination was cut short as I opened my eyes and could hear the moans and groans of some walkers past the fence, I could feel the humidity cling to my dirty skin, and I could smell what I could only think to be the scent of rotting flesh as the majority of the world died and were left unburied.
I could feel my heart rate quickening as I considered my impending doom. Now, I was not only responsible for my own life, but also the boy's that slept in the next room. We were a team and I have realized that I need my teammate. I know I had decided earlier to not get involved with Ethan, but there was something about him that I just couldn't shake. Maybe it was him in general. It seemed that wherever I was, he was stuck to my side, loyal to our alliance. I wanted to be more like him and I needed to start trusting him more, because we were each other's only chance.
I could feel my heart pound hard against my chest, threatening to break free. My breath quickened until I found myself not being able to breath. I clung to my chest trying to make myself calm down. I faintly heard a knock on my door and someone call my name before the world started to lose focus and I fell against the bed and the world turned to black.
I jerked awake as I sharply inhaled. I breathed heavily as I looked around the room, panicked.
"Olivia, It's ok, you're ok, I'm here." I heard Ethan whisper to me
I turned around to face him. He was sitting on the bed leaning against the frame. I locked eyes with him and immediately burst into tears.
"Come here." Ethan said as he reached out to bring me into his arms
"Ethan, what happened? What happened to me?" I asked through tears as I let Ethan wrap his arms around me and I leaned into his chest
"It's ok." Ethan said as he smoothed my hair down
"No Ethan, what happened to me?" I asked
"I think they drugged you." Ethan said quietly not wanting to tell me the truth
"I don't want to be here Ethan, we have to leave." I said
"I know, I know. We will, try to get some sleep ok?" He said
"Please stay with me." I said as I could feel myself drifting off to sleep again
"Always." He said as he kissed the top of my head
