I watched as a single tear slipped down Ethan's cheek and was soaked into his filthy shirt. My own tears weren't far behind.
"It's going to be ok, Ethan." I tried to convince him
"I was so careful." He said shaking his head
"Well you knew that you would run into walkers if you went to get water." I said
"Not about that." Ethan said
"About what then?" I asked confused
Ethan sighed before answering
"I was so careful to keep you safe." Ethan said
I could see sweat dripping down his forehead. I could tell he had a fever, probably an infection from the bite or the bullet.
"Ethan, I am safe. You're safe. We are fine." I said as I reached out to hold his hand
"You don't get it, when I die, you won't have anyone to keep you safe and I can't do anything about that." Ethan said
"You aren't going to die!" I said harshly to him
"Don't pretend like I'm fine Olivia. I'm not my brother. For some reason he survived while the rest of the world didn't. I don't think the same odds are in my favor." Ethan said
"You don't know that." I said
"Can you do me a favor?" Ethan asked
"Yes, of course, anything!" I said
"Can you stop trying to make all of this seem better than it is? I don't want the last things you say to me to be lies." Ethan said as he closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall
I was speechless. How could he have no hope for himself? He knew firsthand what a death does to someone close to you. How could he give up that easily?
I placed the back of my hand across his forehead and could immediately feel the excess heat coming off of his body
"I'm gonna go get you some medicine." I said as I stood up
I could feel the lump grow in my throat as I walked towards the office door on wobbly legs. I turned the knob and as soon as the lock clicked into place leaving Ethan alone, I broke down. My knees buckled underneath me and I crumpled into a heap on my sheets. I sobbed until there were no more tears left in me. Grayson tried to console me once, but I pushed him away and he didn't try again.
Once I couldn't conjure up any more tears, I composed myself, wiped my eyes with my sleeve, and stood up.
"What happened in there?" Grayson asked
"He's lost hope." I said, "He's just come to the decision that he's dying."
"Olivia, you need to think of the possibility that-" Grayson started to say
"No! You don't understand what Ethan went through after he thought you died. We wouldn't be able to live with ourselves if we didn't try everything we could. I lost my entire family more than a month ago; I can't lose the last person I care about too. Ok? So from now on, no more talking about what might happen, just help me fix him." I said harshly to Grayson
I grabbed the first aid kit from the floor and walked back into the office. Ethan had fallen asleep so that medicine was out of the plan. Instead, I wet a towel with cold water and pat it on his face. I was hoping this would cool him down enough until he woke up again.
Even when he was asleep, I could tell that he was in pain. His eyebrows furrowed in the center and sweat dripped from his forehead. I draped the wet towel across his forehead and lay down on his chest.
"I promise, Ethan... No more lies." I whispered before I fell asleep
