The doctor was talking to them again.
"The next two days are going to be recovery. His body has to adapt to the poles in his legs and the new medications then, as soon as it has, we're going to go ahead with the operation to try to fix his hands and finally some more work on his back. After that it'll be simple repair work and waiting. He's still in pain, but he is getting better." The family and friends around the doctor smiled, some sighing in relief. It felt like they could finally breathe again.
"He's gonna be OK?" Grover would never give up on his best friend.
The doctor smiled slightly.
"Its not 100% yet, things could still easily go wrong, but yes. He's getting better." Grover all out grinned at him. The visitors shifted, relaxing in their chairs. It was late and those who were staying over night were starting to settle down.
It was an hour later when they came in.The man in front was just above average height with sunny blond hair, matching Will's and clear blue eyes and he was dressed in double denim with a red and orange t-shirt underneath his jacket.
The man behind him was tall, with dark hair and sea green eyes just like Percy's, his skin had a deep tan and there were smile lines around his eyes. But he wasn't smiling now. The demigods noticed him first.
Their reactions were strange; they looked worried, some sad, a couple even got up and kneeled. This drew the attention of the mortals. The Goode kids and teachers looked up at them confused, but the two men didn't even look at them as they passed. They went straight to Annabeth and Sally, as soon as they passed the demigods got back up and went back to normal, just watching out of the corner of their eyes.
"Sally," The black haired man's voice rolled like the waves, but it was laden with worry, fear, grief, "Is he OK, Sally?! Is our son OK?!" Percy's mother looked up.
"Poseidon." She breathed,"He-Oh Poseidon he's hurt. He's so hurt-" Paul pulled her close as she burst into tears again. Annabeth stepped forward.
"He's severely injured and in pain and he may never heal completely, SIir, but the doctors are saying that he...should...survive." The God of the Sea stared, taking in the tear streaked faces, the sobbing mother and the terrified children and his commanding, authoritive posture dissolved as he crumbled into a chair.
"By Chaos..." He ran his old calloused hands, so like his son's, over his face, "Oh Percy..."
The second man looked down at him, concern flitting across his face like a cloud in a wind storm.
"Uncle P, I gotta..." He gestured vaguely in the direction of the front desk.
Poseidon looked up distractedly.
"Yeah. Yes of course, Apollo. Go" The Sun God nodded and swiftly turned around, nodding to his son before striding off.Chris looked nervous.
"Poseidon, Sir?" The elder God looked up, his face questioning. Chris stuttered on. "I'm sorry, but...are you supposed to be here, Sir?" Poseidon looked him dead in the eyes.
"No." Chris swallowed.
"O-OK." One of the mortal children looked at him.
"Wh-who are you?" Clarisse snorted.
"Idiot. He's Percy's dad." The mortals looked startled.
"But...I thought Paul..." Paul and Poseidon spoke at the same time.
"Step-dad."
"Oh...OK." The mortals went decidedly quiet.
Except for one of the teachers.
"As I understand it, it was your generation that caused the wars these children have mentioned. Am I right in assuming that you are the one who forced that child in this hospital to lead wars?" Poseidon stared at her. His eyes hard, but salt water collecting in them nevertheless.
"We had no choice-"
"Bull!" The mortal teacher interrupted the King of Atlantis.Poseidon sighed, his voice became sad, but calm, ebbing and dlowing like the tides.
"There's nothing I can say to convince you, nothing that will make you understand. Every member of our family is cursed the moment they are born. Every demigod in this room has some kind of broken home or unrest, every one of them has fought for their lives and every one of them has faced death, both for themselves and loved ones, so many times that they don't even view it as unusual anymore. But it wasn't just their generation. This feud and bloodshed started three generations before mine, the family legends say it was at the beginning of the universe I- we...when Percy first met me I told him that I regretted that he was mine." The mortals' eyes widened, the demigods just nodded. "And I do. But I will never regret that he was born and I will never stop being proud of him. So do not accuse me of trying to hurt him, because I would gladly give all of my power and my life, if it ensured him a safe, normal one."
With that, the tired God turned back and took to staring at Percy's door, just like the rest of them.
