The mortals had kept quizzing the demigods, learning about near death experiences, lessons to camp and pranks that had cabins feuding for weeks. They listened and learnt what it was like to live with demigods, the fears and the fun. Above all they learned of these strange teens' respect for Percy. How he united both camps, how no one questioned his leadership and how he's saved them over and over and  how he fought for everyone under his charge.

They learnt how demigods were hunted, how it was miraculous for any to live to 16, much less the more influential ones like Percy and how they were forced to train to sleep lightly and increase their pain tolerance or die.

It was sickening.

But they also learnt of the camaraderie, of how they'd never give up on each other, how they could rely on one another. They learnt about games of capture the flag and basketball, of camp fire sing along and horse riding. How they were all family, in the truest sense of the word.

And that was why seeing Annabeth's face as she returned from Percy's room was so heartbreaking.

As soon as the blond demigod entered the room Thalia and Nico were right there and the others stayed close by.

"How you holding up?" Thalia asked the crying daughter of Athena.

"I-he's so pale..." Thalia hugged her closer, letting the girl bury her face in the hunter's neck.

"Oh Annie, he's gonna be fine. It's Kelp Head we're talking about here, we've all seen him get back up from stab wounds and worse. Remember Mt St Helens." The weeping teen let out a harsh laugh.

"He crashed his own funeral." The others smiled.

"We've wasted tonnes of perfectly good shrouds on the idiot and he keeps getting back up, don't worry Annabeth." The comforts would have worked if it didn't sound like she was trying to convince herself as well.

"He...they're taking him in for another operation....they're....they're putting the metal rods in his legs and-" She chocked off, "And inserting a-a tube to-to stop his lung from deflating a-again while he's still.....unconscious.....they-they couldn't risk waiting any-any longer." Her sobs got worse as the demigods around her paled. "We've survived so-so much and-and now this..." She shut her eyes tight and her entire body trembled.

"Oh, Honey." It was the first time Percy's mother had spoken throughout the whole ordeal. She enveloped Annabeth in a hug, holding her future daughter-in-law like a life line. "We can do this." They whispered, no one was sure who said it.

The two grieving women stepped out of hearing range, simply holding each other.

Then Thalia broke a chair.

The mortals all jumped as it snapped, the crack resounding through the room seemingly vibrating bone as the demigoddess vented. The other demigods barely looked up, understanding her feeling completely.

"It's just not fair! We never get a happy ending! Why can't we get a 'happily ever fucking after'!? If anyone deserves it it's Percy but no! I've watched too many friends die for this to be happening now! And to him!" She stormed out, silver tears running down her cheeks, leaving a pile of broken chair behind her.

"I'll go make sure she doesn't kill anyone." Nico's voice was subdued as he followed his cousin.
There was silence for a minute.

"She right you know." This time it was Jason, "We've fought so hard for so long, we've watched so many friends die and killed...so many.....it's just not fair, especially for Percy. I mean...I hated him at first but now.....he's fought beside me now and I've fought beside him, there isn't a force on earth that will stop me doing everything in my power to save him but when he needed us most...." He broke off, unable to finish the thought as his girlfriend lent into him, one arm around his shoulder.

"We know Jace. We know."

Annabeth looked up. She's managed to regain her composure enough to speak in full sentences again.

"His scars are worse." The mortals looked confused as the demigods' mouths set into grim lines, their eyes hardening even more, un-shed tears reflecting rainbows. "He was already so stupidly self conscious about his scars, it's going to be so much harder for him now. And he's going to be in a wheelchair for so long..." She took a long, deep breath, trying to soothe her abused throat. "He's going to be hurt, but he's going to try so hard to ignore it for us." She smiled painfully. His expression reflected on the other soldiers.

"He's an idiot." Clarisse, "He got all his scars fighting, fighting for us and for himself. There ain't no better badge of honour. Their marks of how much he's gone through to save us and if he so much as looks ashamed I'm gonna kick his stupid ass."

The  teens smiled.

"We'll help him Annabeth, there won't be any demigod" (they'd told the mortals that that was just what they'd nicknamed themselves because their parents acted like they were Gods) "anywhere that wont stand up for him, support him. He'll have both camps behind him and if we can fight armies we can fight his idiotic subconscious." Their eyes brightened just that little bit.

"Now all the seaweed brain has to do is wake up." 25 hours into the coma.
