I sat on the couch watching SportsCenter and guess who the main story was.
“An hour ago, general manager Peter Chiarelli of the Boston Bruins announced that they had found a temporary person to fill in for president of the team since their current one, Cam Neely is scheduled for hip surgery and is planned to be out up to four months.”
The other anchor, Patrick, went on to say “The new president of the Bruins is Jessica Neely, Cam Neely’s very own daughter.” He placed his note cards down and turned to his anchor “I didn’t even know that he had a second daughter.”
“Neither did I but she is going to be the first female president in NHL history. I’m actually excited to see what she can bring.”
“I am too. You know Joe, she might be a female but she is the daughter of legendary Cam Neely. I’m looking forward to see what she can bring to the table.” Patrick turned to the camera “Alright it is time for a commercial break.”
I flicked the channel “Yeah they’re the only nice people.”
While flicking I heard someone clear their throat, I turned to see my dad standing in the doorway “Honey why are you up so early?”
“What you haven’t heard? I’m the big story right now.”
“Of course you’re going to be on the sport news channels. And there are going to be coaches in this league giving their opinion but the best thing is to ign-“
I cut my dad off “Dad, I’m on other news channels.”
He looked at me strange “What?”
I flicked the channel to Fox 25 and lo and behold I was on it.
“In more recent news, more pictures of Cam Neely’s daughter Jessica have surfaced.” The news anchor stated.
Then a slideshow of images of a girl partying and dancing on the top of a bar, looking absolutely drunk popped up on the screen. The anchor continued to say “And this is supposed to be the Bruins newest president.”
“She looks like a party animal.”
I turned my back and leaned over the kitchen counter as I let the tears come streaming down. My dad took the remote and shut the TV off before coming over to me.
He rubbed my back “Shh pumpkin don’t cry.”
I turned to him “Dad! Those pictures aren’t even of me. The fucking public is making me seem like I’m some damn slut who gets drunk and parties around.”
He walked over and placed me into a hug “I know those aren’t pictures of you. Hun people are trying to gain recognition for themselves by making you have a bad reputation.”
“But why? What did I do to them?”
“You didn’t do anything Jess. The media likes to tear people down, but you have to not let them get to you. You need to stand strong and know that you are the better person.” He patted my head and sighed “Honey you don’t need to go through this I can always find someone else to tak-“
