The next day, I woke up in a cold sweat. I'd been plagued with nightmares. I realized I'd slept the entire night in Jerome's bed. The first thought that hit me was Where'd he sleep? I rose out of his bed immediately, realizing I felt completely better.
“Jerome?” I called, not bothering to check the time. “Where are you?”
“Ah! Wha?” He called. I could tell I'd woken him up. His voice hadn't come from outside his room. I turned back around. He was sprawled in the chair in his room, head on his shoulder. Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, he asked again.
“What did you want?”
“Jerome? Did you sleep there the whole night?” I asked.
“Uh, yeah, why?”
“You didn't have to do that! You could've just woken me up when you wanted your bed back!”
“But I never wanted my bed back. I was fine sleeping in the chair.”
“But...”
“Nah. Don't worry about it, Cat.”Hearing him say Cat again, I was reminded of when he'd called me Mitch.
“Oh, yeah. Jerome, yesterday you- called me Mitch. Wh...”
He tilted his head to the side.
“Did I? Sorry. You just...”I gestured for him to continue.
“You just really remind me of Mitch. Like, freakishly similar.”
I felt a wash of relief.
“Oh. Yeah. I get that a lot,” I smiled. Thank god, it was just a mistake. Jerome nodded.
“Anyway. Good morning, I guess.”
“Oh- yeah. Sorry for waking you up. I didn't know where you slept, and...”
“Don't worry so much about me. I'll always be fine,” Jerome said with a smile. I returned it.
“So... What do you want to do?”
“...Personally, I'm running out with the guys to pick up some groceries and stuff. Adam wasn't feeling great, so he stayed home today. I hope that's okay with you, but do you want to go or...?”
“I'll stay home. When are you guys goin'?”
“We're probably gonna head out once everyone's awake. We've actually got a lot of stuff- mostly boring stuff- that we've got to do today, and it's probably gonna take the whole day. Sorry,” He apologized.
“Nah. Don't worry about it!” I assured him. He smiled at me. I heard noise downstairs.
“Everyone must be up,” I noted. “You should probably go.” He nodded.
“I... Guess I'll see you later.”
I nodded at him, smiling.
“See you.”
I knocked on the door.
“Adam? I know you have a good reason for not going...” I called. I heard a sigh from inside and the doorknob began to turn. My jaw dropped.
I was staring at myself.
“Holy sh...”
Adam-Mitch-chuckled sadly.
“Hey, Mitch.”
