Peridot sat in the infirmary, holding back tears. Her career was over. The bleach white walls spun and spun and the smell of whatever soap they were using made her nauseous. Or maybe that was the large amounts of blood she had lost in the last three days. The shock, and likely effects of the painkillers, made her head pound so horribly she could barely think. She would be put in a rehabilitation ward. The thought of that terrified her. Sit in a glorified prison for the rest of her life. A tall, busty woman in uniform strutted into the nurses office.
"Almandine!" Peridot shot up to salute but instead face planted right into the hard tile floor. She shot right back up. She knew she had a bruise forming on her cheek by the sharp pain that lingered. Great. Just Great.
"Peridot. We have assessed your capabilities in this camp and your importance to your society as it's whole," Peridot's heart sank. She knew she wasn't that important. She was getting dismissed, and put in the ward. She would die in the ward too, either from infection from all the diseases running rampid in that place, or be murdered, a very regular occurrence in the place. "And management has concluded that you are fit for lower ranking work. Starting today you will be issued a prosthetic and will be teaching the rowdy cadets in sector 7. We will be assigning you to," She dug though her pockets and opened her glowing transmitter. She swiped until she found Peridot's file details, which took quite a while.
"Lapis Smith." Almandine finally spoke out. Smith. That's the name they give the pick ups. The people they find in the wasteland. Lucky me. But i guess anything is better than the ward. Almandine continued "She is rebellious as all hell. Stubborn as a mule too. She even.." She squinted to look closer at her transmitter. "bit her last instructor when confronted about her disregard for instruction." She gave Peridot a look that said it all. A "You poor, dead soul" kind of look.
"You will be working with her in the 2540-2541 class." She lowered her voice. "I would say good luck, but even luck can't save you."
Peridot sighed.
Never had that much good luck anyway.
Training, Day 1, Period 1.
"Rolecall!" A puffy, curvy, and short woman called. Her name was Amethyst, and she too had been "re-purposed" as the officers had said. The cadets went quiet. Then burst out with laughter.
"We're not listening to a damn thing you have to say shortie!" One of the cadets mocked from the inside of the crowd of whooping and hollering.
Peridot prayed to every god out there that this Lapis wasn't as bad as these kids. She half hoped someone to come in saying "whoops, wrong class. Your class is this way." But, that was sadly not what was going to happen.
"L-Lapis Smith?" Peridot barely managed a mutter that was quickly lost in the ear deafening screams of the cadets.
"Lapis Smith! Get your sorry excuse for a cadet over here." Amethyst yelled over all the cadets. The crowd erupted into "Oh's" and "Oooo's"
A nineteen year old girl came out from the crowd scowling like she just saw a puppy killed in front of her. By her thick eyeliner and heavy dark makeup, she looks like she would've probably killed the puppy herself.
"So this is my new trainer... Well at least this one's cute." Lapis walked right up to Peridot and pushed up her chin so she was now forced to look right at her. Her scowl quickly transformed into a shark-like grin. Peridot was suddenly aware of one, how much taller her cadet was, and as well how... Intimidating she was.
"G-Get your hands off me!" Peridot tried to be intimidating as she swatted Lapis's hand away. She knew that she probably just sounded like a twerp. "I am your superior! You will address me as such, cadet."
"Lazuli has a new chew toy!" At that comment, the crowd roared. Peridot's face glowed bright red with embarrassment. To Peridot's surprise, Lapis didn't laugh. In fact as soon as she heard the comment even the smile that was there vanished. She stepped away from Peridot, her arms at her side in fists. Lapis turned around.
"Which one of you pathetic lowlife's said that?" She growled. The whole room went deathly silent. Fearful silence. A short, chubby girl stepped out from the crowd.
"M-Me Miss.Lapis." She sputtered, obviously shook up for being called out. She looked at Lapis like she was a mouse and Lapis was the cat.
"Apologize." Lapis's teeth were gritted. She stared down at the girl furious.
"S-Sorry. I didn't mean any harm." She muttered looking away from Lapis's piercing gaze.
"No." She paused and turned to Peridot. "To her."
Huh?
"S-Sorry Miss...."
Peridot spoke cautiously. Was this a trap to embarrass her with another uproar? "Peridot. Miss Peridot." Lapis turned to Peridot.
"Well then, Shall we be going, Miss Peridot?" Lapis looked straight down at Peridot. Dang I wish I was taller. Maybe then Lapis would be less intimidating. If intimidating was really the way to describe it....
"Yeah lets go."
