Two weeks. That's all it had been. Two weeks since the battle that changed his life. Two weeks ago, Hiccup and Toothless battled Drago Bludvist and the Bewilderbeast. Two weeks ago, Stoick the Vast had passed away and two weeks ago, Hiccup became chief.
It had been rough, but he luckily had his mother, Astrid, Toothless and all his friends, to help him get through it. Today though, was one of those particularly rough days. When he woke up, he automatically knew it wasn't going to be a good day. Whether that be because of the few grey clouds, or the strong ache in his left leg, that didn't seem to go away as of late, he wasn't sure.
He went downstairs, trying his best to hide his limp, and his mother didn't seem to notice. Though just before he left, he saw his mother sadly smiling in the living room, but couldn't see what she was looking at.
"Morning Mom. What're you doing up so early?" He asked, walking into where she was.
"I-I couldn't sleep...So, I thought it might be a good idea to look through some older stuff. Well, old to you, mostly new to me." Valka told her son, with a small smile.
Hiccup looked at the small table in front of her. There was one of Stoick's old helmets, Stoick's axe, a smaller cape-that Hiccup remembered his father having made for him, because he was always trying to play with Stoick's-and a painting of Stoick, Valka and baby Hiccup.
Valka smiled sadly before looking up at her son. Hiccup bit his lip and looked down at the ground.
"He loved you very much, Hiccup. And he would be so proud of you now, more than you'll ever know." She told him, holding his hand.
Hiccup looked at her and smiled, his eyes watery. He quickly blinked them back, however. He couldn't cry now, he was a chief, he had duties to get to! He didn't have time to grieve any more. He had done that one too many times (according to him at least) during the previous week. "Thanks Mom." He said and squeezed his mother's hand, before letting go.
"I'll see you later, okay?" He said and she smiled and nodded as he walked out the door.
Hiccup walked outside, and it only seemed darker than it had when he had woke. Now not only was his leg hurting, but he was missing his father. He bit his lip, before shaking his head and trying to smile. Whether it be fake or real, he hoped no one could tell.
And off he went, to the Great Hall, to start the day.
-------------
He remembered his father saying it before, but now he believed it more than ever. This village could be very annoying and overly needy when they wanted to be.
He had sat in a chair in the same room, for a few hours, answering multiple question after question upon how to get rid of the ice, where to put the ice and who took care of what ice. It was a lot of ice, ice and more ice. It was a difficult task, yes, But Hiccup hadn't expected to be asked this many questions. Some, he didn't even know how to answer himself, While others seemed plain obvious. After all of that, he finally had to leave, as Mulch and Bucket were having a problem down at the docks. Hiccup followed Mulch down and when he got there, he found that Bucket was out on a boat in the middle of the harbour.
"Well, what's he doing out there? What's the problem?" Hiccup asked, not seeing anything wrong.
"His fishing rod is stuck to the boat and a dragon has caught the hook and has been pullin' him around for a while! He's stuck out there! An' I'm af'aid he's gonna 'it the ice!" Mulch exclaimed.
Hiccup sighed. "Oh boy...Alright, come on Toothless, let's go get 'em." Hiccup said. Hiccup climbed on his dragon and Toothless took off. Oh how badly he wanted Toothless just to keep flying. Past the boat, off of Berk, leaving all of his worries behind him. But alas he couldn't do so. Toothless landed on the boat, just before it jerked to the left, and Hiccup fell over. Toothless helped his friend up and Hiccup gave him a grateful smile.
"Bucket? Where's the rod?" He asked.
"Right this way Chief!" Bucket said, walking towards a stuck rod.
Hiccup sighed. How in the world did Bucket even manage to get it stuck? That was a story he would rather not know.
------------
After helping Bucket get back to shore, and getting a storm warning from the man, Hiccup helped around the village to prepare for the storm. Only by the time they had done what they needed to do, the storm was gone, as was Bucket's warning.
The rest of the day was like this with multiple requests, everyone asking him of everything, sending him into a flustered mess inside his mind, while still trying to seem like he understood everything that was happening. Finally, it started to grow dark, and the village seemed to calm, the removal of ice being done for the day, not to be started again until morning. Hiccup sighed in relief and rubbed Toothless' head as the dragon cooed.
"Y'know what? We've been working hard all day, let's see if we can find the others, maybe they'll want to do something, even if it doesn't last very long." Hiccup said. As they began to walk though, a sharp pain shot through Hiccup's leg and the young man stumbled. Toothless caught his friend and cooed in concern. It was his first day with his prosthetic all over again.
"Thanks bud." He said and before he could protest, Toothless picked up his rider with his head and Hiccup slid onto Toothless' back. Hiccup laughed and scratched behind his friend's ear. "Thanks, again, bud. Come on, let's go." He said with a smile. Toothless started to run and Hiccup laughed, a genuine laugh, something that hadn't been around in a while. Toothless always seemed to know exactly what his friend needed to make his day better.
