Spying on the enemy

I woke up on Saturday morning with the worst cold in my life. My head felt like my brain was beating up my skull, my feet were sore for some reason, I was a 102 degrees Fahrenheit but I was cold, I had constant goosebumps, and I was on my period! Talk about starting the weekend with a bang!

So all I did the whole day was Netflix and chill with 3 bowls of chicken soup, crackers, and coffee. My mother has gone total control freak on us that it has brought the word "Tiger Mom" to a whole new level. I never got to ask my parents about that night because they kept dodging everything that I said. I mean, I stepped out the door to get the newsletter on the front step and she went crazy! That animal attack thing must've freaked her out, considering the fact that she cried. But this was nothing compared to my father's reaction. He's always the cheerful one who doesn't shut up and loves making dad jokes, but now he's like a completely different person. All he said this entire day was "Good morning", "be careful", and "hmm..." And the rest of the time he's not talking, he either looks through the window or reads old books that are in a different language.  Jenna on the other hand was being her annoying and infuriating self. Honestly, why couldn't she have gotten the personality switch instead?!

So, considering the situation this household was in, you could guess my struggle when I got this urgent phone call from my best friend:

"Hello," I replied groggily from my couch, where I was lying switching channels.

"Are you ready yet, I'm gonna be at your house in 20 minutes to pick you up?"

"Huh?" What the heck's she on about?

"Please don't tell me you forgot Kelly's party!"

Shit! I completely forgot about that!

"Ugh, Al' I'm sick, and my parents have me on literal lockdown." I groaned as I rolled over and hit the floor.

"Oh come on Ninny, you promised!" I could hear her disappointment through the phone.

"Alice, my parents have gone berserkers since that attack on Friday, they won't even let me out on the front porch!"

"Can't you sneak out?"

Oh dear lord this child.

"I am sick, and my parents are literally patrolling this house 24/7, don't you think they'll notice?"

"Tell them your staying at my place to study."

"Yeah, like they'll fall for that, unless your mother is willing to lie for us when my parents call her every hour."

"My parents are in Hawaii on a business trip for the weekend, Verona staying with me until she goes back to college on Monday, OH!"

Oh no. I can hear a plot forming inside her mind. It sounds stupid and ridiculous.

"I'll ask Verona to pretend to be mom and talk to your parents!"

"What if Verona doesn't want to do that, my sister puts me under the bus for everything."

"Are you kidding, all Verona wants is me out of the house so that she can have some "alone time" with her boyfriend."

Ew.

"Well, what if my parents want to talk to me, or what if they figure this out?"

I'm trying so hard not to yell and alert everyone in the neighborhood.

"Verona can say that your in the bathroom or something, and don't worry, she has a good mom voice, it's how she used to trick me to do the dishes when I was a kid." Alice replied.
