Today is my first day of training with Sam and I'm already the slightest bit agitated. It's not that I dislike him or anything, it's just that we have absolutely nothing in common.
Not to sound cocky, but there's also the fact that I'm a lot better than him at everything in the physicality department. Still, he'd never admit that.
We'd just finished our cardio for today with a three mile run. After that we went to practice hand to hand combat.
Three rounds into the fight, Sam became frustrated that he hadn't won any of them yet.
I sigh deeply, crossing my arms over my chest.
"How have I not even beaten you once yet?" He wipes the sweat from his face in annoyance.
"I was a trained ARC soldier," I say, careful to annunciate the 'was'.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," he waves his hand, bending over to catch his breath.
"Let's just take a break. Get some water," I suggest and after a moment he agrees.
When I work out is pretty much the only time I ever drink water. Because I have a tablet I don't need it to survive, but it's still a luxury when you have a dry throat.
As I sip from the cup of water, I find myself observing Will and Ari over on the obstacle courses. Ari is able to complete each one with precision and grace. Will on the other hand, not so much.
I watch as he falls onto the mat beneath the horizontal ladder which he had previously been hanging from.
Ari covers her mouth and rushes over to him. I chuckle as she helps him up and pats him on the back, no doubt trying to console him.
He's got a long way to go and I too have my own training to get done.
"Alright, let's keep training," I call to Sam. "I've got to be ready for my mission."
. . .
The straps of my seat keep me firmly in place. The drone vibrates softly as we move through the sky. The other people sitting beside me stare silently ahead and I do the same.
We all wear bullet proof vests and headsets, which hauntingly reminds me of my days with the ARC, along with the customary Partisan uniform. We've each been distributed one gun per person, but we shouldn't have to use them.
It's been three weeks of training and my first mission is currently in affect. This one will not be critical because Strieker doesn't trust me enough yet, but I'm positive that I'll still be surveyed heavily to make sure I don't try anything.
Our assignment is to simply sit in the drone until needed and if that happens, then instructions will be given from there.
The drones are overlooking all the Eastward lands that the Society doesn't inhabit. They'll scout out the area and if anything comes up, we'll go down to investigate.
But I've been told that rarely anything happens.
As we sit here in silence my mind drifts and ponders over the time we've spent with the Partisans. I haven't seen Aidlyn very often, but Will and I hangout. She's been off with Riley because as it turns out, they used to know each other. And somehow I get the impression that they were more than just friends.
Honestly I hate seeing them together. I can't help feel like there's something off with Riley. I don't trust him.
Without warning, a door at the front of the cargo hold slides open, revealing a man I don't know the name of. But I get the feeling he's the head of our patrol squadron, just by the looks of him.
