– Eve

Humming softly as I waited for emails to load, I reached for my coffee mug and brung it to my lips. Letting the bitter taste wash over my tongue, I fixed my eyes back on my emails. This was usually how I spent my evenings, busking off the free wifi in Starbucks and drinking coffee. Could I get any more hipster?

A certain email caught my attention, an email from Karen Woods. I swallowed my coffee, clicking on the email to read whether I'd gotten the job at Look Magazine or not. It had only been a few days so I was either expecting a quick rejection or a definite yes

"Welcome to Look Magazine, Eve. We're looking forward to having you on our team."

A forced squeak left my mouth and I looked around the empty cafe, seeing if anybody had heard me. To my delight, nobody had and I guessed it was partly because the other customers were sat on the opposite side of the room to me and the barista's were busy cleaning up for the night.

Reaching for my phone, I was quick to grab my phone and open up my messages to text about my success. I wasn't one to gloat, but I was proud of myself and I wanted to let people know about my recent success.

To: Sarah
I got the job!

My finger hovered over my Dad's contact number, I knew he'd be happy for me as I'd inherited the creative gene from him. My parents were usually busy though, and I briefly considered waiting it out until I had worked there a week but I felt like both my parents needed to know that their funding for me to go University had actually meant something.

To: Dad
Just thought I'd let you know, I got a job at Look Magazine. I told Mum, I had an interview but I don't know if she got my text. Speak soon, love you.

I always texted my parents like I was writing a letter, it was highly unlikely that either of my parents would answer their texts. I knew for a fact they were busy redecorating their hotel, but it wasn't like they didn't talk to me. Both me and my brother got frequent calls from both of them to make sure we were eating and getting enough to sleep.

"Excuse me, are you done with this?" a teenage barista asked, fiddling with the hairband on her wrist. I nodded, giving her a quick smile as I watched her take away my coffee cup.

It was now I decided to reply to my email, my fingers hovered over the keys as I tried to think of something to write. In the end, I settled with a grateful thank you and a few of my contact details and I shut my laptop lid and slipped it into my bag.

Tomorrow initiated a new stage in my life.

"You got the job as well then?" a familiar Australian voice said, he slid into the lift next to me and greeted me with a smile. He ruffled up his curly hair, sighing briefly.

"Yeah, they emailed me last night asking me to come in." I responded, shifting my portfolio from one arm to the other as I watched him press the button to go up to the eighth floor.

"Same here." he turned to me then, sticking out his hand "Seeing as we're going to be working together, I'm Noah."

"Eve." I said with a smile, shaking his hand quickly "Where 'bouts in Australia are you from?"

"Brisbane." he said, leaning against the back of the elevator "Are you from London?"

I shook my head, "I'm from the Isle of Wight." I hesitated as I took in his confused expression, "It's a little island off the coast down south."

He nodded, "Nice. London's always appealed to me, I came here to go to University."

"Same here." I said, following him out of the elevator as the doors slid open. We walked up to the front desk where Karen and the receptionist were talking over the computer, Karen's eyes lit up when she saw us and she hurried over to us with open arms.

"Eve!" she yelled, rubbing my arm with her hand before she turned to look up at Noah and pinched his cheeks between her fingers "And my newest editor, welcome Noah!"

She turned on her heels then, beckoning us to follow her into the work space. Noah rubbed his cheek, frowning a little before he bent down to whisper in my ear "Is that a British thing?"

"It's a Grandma thing. Maybe she's just proud to have you on her team." I said, chuckling lightly. Karen turned around to face us then, pointing over to the collection of people in the right corner of the room.

"Right that's where the Editors are." Karen said, "Sandy will show you what to do with the laptops, unless you have your own?"

Noah nodded, scurrying off towards the editors table. Karen wrapped an arm around my shoulders then, leading me towards the far back of the work room.

"Now, Eve, we're just going to go through your portfolio today and then have you take some photos for us. Sound good?" Karen asked, pushing open a glass door and dragging me into a room filled with modern and retro cameras. This was element, something I felt truly comfortably doing and I was so happy that I had finally found a job where I could do what I loved all day.

It was then my phone buzzed in my bag, I fished it out to check the text I had just received expecting it to be from Sarah but my eyebrows twisted into a disgusted expression as I read it.

Good luck at your new job. You probably won't last there long.

There was only one person who would say that and I wasn't having him ruin this for me. No way in Hell, was Simon ruining my life again.
