March 10, 2010, outside Baghdad, Iraq
Things are starting to come to a close here for me, Haru's tour ends in about a week and he'll be leaving the service while I still have another month before my tour is complete. We had been called to take care of a small enemy presence near Baghdad, doesn't seem too bad, right? Just as we arrived to the city, I hear a familiar sound, a loud bang, I watch as an explosion goes off about 10 yards ahead of us and damaged the Humvee in front of us while debris shattered our windshield. "IED!" We all get out of the vehicle and go to help the others in the damaged vehicle out, they were lucky, it was only a small explosion that couldn't do much damage, we pulled out all the men, there were no casualties, only injuries.
Just as we get the men out, and Corpsmen patch some of their wounds, we hear pops and quickly get to the nearest cover we can find before opening fire. I pull myself out of cover and open fire on whatever enemies I see, getting two killed. I quickly get back to cover to reload my rifle as I shout "You got any Haru!?" But to no response. I quickly take myself out of cover before a force knocks me to the ground, I put my head to my helmet and feel a small dent. I hide behind the Humvee and take it off to see what happened
When I took it off, I noticed that something fell off, I picked it up and noticed that it was a flattened bullet, the Kevlar on my helmet was so strong that it saved my life, holy shit.
//AN: now I know what you're thinking, "Oh now come on Dakota that's complete bullshit" but Kevlar is in fact extremely powerful and can flatten bullets if hit, it's the same stuff used to make bulletproof vests//
I quickly put my helmet back on and begin to fire again, killing another insurgent. After a couple minutes, the enemies were either dead, wounded, or surrendered. Those few minutes seemed to last an hour and just as I settle down, the Corpsmen bring the wounded and I look over in disbelief.
"'No..."
"This can't be real..."
