I really should’ve thought this shit through first...
My name is Harleigh Swain. I was born on 24th March 1994 and two years ago, I was jumped into a gang to save my brother, Daniel, from prison. Probably one of the stupidest decisions I’ve ever made but whatever, it’s not like I hate everything about myself now, right?
My Mum died about 4 years ago, leaving me, my Dad and my brother alone. Typically, that didn’t do so well for family relations, but it could’ve been worse. We hardly ever see Dad, he’s always working, but he’s doing it all for us, making it worthwhile.
Dan didn’t cope that well with Mum dying, and, being a year older than me, started messing about with people you really shouldn’t mess about with. Doing drugs and boozing the majority of junior year, he got jumped into TX3 when he started hanging out with members of that gang. Being the kind of kid you generally don’t take much notice of, he started drugs running for the various “clientele” TX3 cover.
Problem was, TX3 had been on the police radar for a while and needing to take the spotlight off themselves, the bosses decided someone needed to get caught for something, cue... my bro. However, and God knows why, there was an option for an escape route. I’d been checking out his activity for the past month and TX3, though we can only guess why, aren’t big fans of people snooping into their business.
“We’ve been looking into finding a ‘scape-goat for the police, Sweetheart,” I can remember Louis Kleith, leader of TX3 cornering me into one of the sheds I’d been hiding in. “What do you say? We give ‘em Dan-the-man, yeah?”
“What?! No bloody way, you can’t sell him out!”
“Well, since you feel so strongly about it, what’d you say to you joining the gang then instead?” I can vividly remember his putrid breath blowing into my face.
“If I did, would you leave him alone? Find someone else?”
“Sure Sweets, as long as you promise to do what you’re asked, you know what I mean?” I really hoped I didn’t.
“Yeah,” I agreed.
... My initiation was horrible, one of the worst experiences of my life. The girls of the gang already members, circled me then attacked. They beat me up to the point where I was about to faint from the pain. A solid hour I was kicked and punched. The only thing that kept me conscious was the light pinch I gave myself each time I felt I was about to sleep.
I passed though. I had to stay off school for a week to avoid awkward questions from my teachers and probably the police.
Dan went bat-shit when he found me in A&E the next morning.
“You stupid cow! What the hell were you thinking?”
I told him it was because I was trying to protect my phone and money from being stolen. He never did find out what’d really happened.
Anyway, surviving my initiation, I soon became I valued member of TX3. Louis seemed impressed anyway, and not soon after I killed my first late-payment, Louis raised my position. I am now part of one of the sub-recruitment teams, right-hand of my commander, Tony Steventon. We carry out the PR between gangs, between gang communications etc.
In fact, that was how I first met Xavier Matheson.
