Blackbird

Chapter 10

I rushed through the crowd of confused people and grabbed a set of keys. After about a minute of fumbling with them to try and get the man out, Ilva's nimble hands replaced my own and instantly found the right key.

"Here you go. Now you can unlock his cage", she said, not noticing my mood.

"Don't you dare tell me what to do, Ilva!" I said angrily, slapping her.

She probably could have caught my hand if she was prepared, but apparently she couldn't see why torturing an innocent man would make me mad.

There was an uncomterble silence, and a few whistles of appreciation. Ilva raised her head and stared at me. There was a warning in her eyes.

"The kitten has teeth", Arbor stated casually. Both Ilva and me looked at him, glaring.
"And you have no heart!" I retorted back, and turned my back to him so I could open the cage. From the silence that echoed around the clearing, I could tell none of them were pleased.

"What's your name?" I ask kindly to the trembling man once he'd got out of the cage.

"James", he replied, nervous of the people around him.

"Well James, don't you think you'd better have a lie down? We'll leave these mutts to it to have a little think about what they're doing with their lives other than causing people pain, shall we?"

He looked around at the faces aside from me, and cautiously nodded.

We headed slowly out, with me supporting James, and as we got to edge of the clearing, I turned around and (oblivious to James discomfort) said "I don't know who most of you are, but I've seen enough to know you're all monsters. You discust me."

I made to turn around, but not before a very tall man turned me around and slapped me. The sheer force of it turned my head sideways.
"Now you and her are even", he sneered before turning back around.

I had an urge to punch him.

I turned to Ilva cluelessly for an explanation. Ilva was drunk and had her arm around the man who had just slapped me.

"He's my boyfriend" Ilva mouthed at me.
"You have bad taste" I mouthed back.

We left.
